My friend and I chopped off 1/2 of one of our fingers. We climb 5.12 now. We started a club called the "9 1/2 club". "Normies" (as we call them) can't come in the treehouse. Anyone else out there missing digits and can climb hard? Wanna join our club? You have to send in pictures of your hand. Tommy Caldwell, where are you. You are our great leader!!!!! dreez

The rating for this troll gets a .MF suffix because the poster is MF'ker. Somebody else who knows how to rate trolls will give it the Txx rating, but it gets the Txx.MF rating because the poster is a MF'ker. Not only is the poster a MF'ker, but also a callous, demented troll. I met TC at the base of the Zodiac when he was going up with his father. How many people can say they've done that? TC is cordial, up on his game, polite, funny, conversational, fit, inspirational. Just because someone is able to do something good doesn't mean you should trash them. That sounds alot like the Hollywood system of killing off the other starlets/studlets so you can get a role; it has no place in climbing. Troll.

This doesn`t even rate on the T scale, smatter fact I would rate it as a minus so T-5. Definitely a vicious little troll that deserves a good spanking. Actually this then brings up a good question what do we do with vicious little trolls like this. Should we vote this troll off the island.

Really! The nerve! You troll with a capital T! Hey, I know where you're coming from, though--I did the same thing in sympathy with J.W. Bobbit. Luckily I still had six inches after cutting off half. It's not the size of the stump that counts you know.... C'mon people--doesn't anyone see the humor in amputation anymore? The Half the Man I Used to Be UnaBonger

All due respect Normie, I was serious. We lost our fingers in accidents like our hero Tommy and love climbing hard. Also heard that Tommy is great guy, love to meet him someday. Anyone that fights to come back after a major injury like that is an inspiration (Lance Armstrong) to us wannabees. Sorry you can't join us Normie, dreez

You just gave me a great idea, thanks everyone Moderator: Can we create a group for people who have suffered some tragedy and have come back? Kinda like the Lance Armstrong group for climbing. I'll volunteer to moderate it. The goal is for people that have lost hope to read stories and want to ride the horse again. We all love reading stories about the blind guy on Everest who also climbs trad 5.10. Or the person who lost legs in accident and climbs with hands, etc. This will be the archive for those that want insipiration and hope. No Normies allowed!!! (ps. that's a joke for those who have lost their sense of humor) Rules: 1) You have to be able to laugh at yourself and make others laugh 2) The stories are about people who lost physical capability and came back 3) You want to inspire others with your story For example, take mine: Lost finger in table saw. Started climbing. Was climbing 5.12c one day. Someone saw mine hand and said "Your missing a finger!!". Someone else who also was missing a finger started to climb with me then. We decided to call ourselves 9.5 club. Our goal is to climb anything a "Normie" can climb. Let's do it, come on.

So let me guess, you bypassed the blade guard or didn't use a push rod or took some other, pardon the pun, short cut when you lost your finger? Has your incident given you a hightened awareness of safety?

Hey, I assume she climbs? Tell your daughter to send me a scan of her hand. I will post it on our web site. She will be our inspiration and great leader. She will give hope to other kids and inspire them. She is "The One". dreez

I lost my left hand, ring finger. My friend lost is right hand, index finger. Tried stopping a door from closing and lost the battle. Nothing can stop us baby!!! We use to whine about not doing 5.13 because we were "crippled". After that picture of Tommy Caldwell doing a 5.15, we have no more excuses, we must climb 13!!! It is our destiny!!!! 9.5 clubs rules, takes no prisoners, feels no pain, rises above the agony. Try to stop us or even keep up with us. Either you are with us or your against against (I'm quoting Ashcroft). Join NOW. 9.5's of the world, UNITE!!!!!! with us!!!! dreez

Yes this is an elitist group. You have to be better then the rest with less then the rest. Or wannabee. You also must be able to laugh at yourself. We permit temporary whining right after the accident, but you have to want to get back on the horse and ride to greatness and make fun of your tragedy. dreez

I guess I'm in. Lost a fist fight with a shaper while making raised panels. Left hand, middle finger is gone from the last knuckle up. Great for flipping people off to varying degrees, depending on how pissed off you are. left hand if you just cut me off at the light, right hand for anyone from Mass. I climb as hard/harder now than before the accident (10 years ago).

At Michael's request I've moved this to Injurys and Accidents (it's not General, sorry, the poor mods just don't need another thread in there. besides, it's more pertinent in here). Since after all this does seemed to have degenerated into a decent, and somewhat interesting discussion on injury's and how people cope/continue to climb with them. -Matt

I love you dude. Thanks for promoting us handicapped climbing wonders to Injuries. I love you man. There has to be more of us. So far I count 3 adults and 1 child who are disfigured super-heroes of the world. I read about Messner whinning about his days alone on Everest and I'm thinking "Dude, you got all 10 digits, what is the issue!!!!" What about climbing 5.15 like Tommy with 9.5??? Tell me more stories. Make me laugh, make me cry, but make the 9.5 club PROUD!!!! love ya, dreez

Thanks for this thread, I thought I was alone when I lost the ring and the pinky finger on my left hand in what has been referred to as a short cut (I was trying to support a family of five when my wife was unemployed). My climbing has obviously improved since I only began a year after my "shortcut". I have often wondered if I can now morally park in handicap spaces because of this injury. This thread has provided inspiration for the rest of my life. Dave

I want to say that as a mod for the Injuries and Accidents Forum, I am embarrassed you people are being like this. I personally think Tommy's pretty cool for being able to do what he does, and this is mostly a joke. If you're serious about your quest for fingerless friends, at least change the title of this thread.
