For cragging there's Consumnes River Gorge about an hour away. Good granite toproping with a couple dozen worthy routes, dozens more less than worthy ones. Across the river is a lead wall with a sport area (thin and slabby), and the upper wall has up to 4 pitch climbs, but nothing spectacular. Consumnes is mainly a Fall-Spring area, blazing hot in summer. You can hit Tahoe about 3 hours away, Lover's Leap, Sugerloaf, etc. Worthy for weakend trips, and is good from about June to October.

Check out the routes database.

Theres an entire section that is...
(drum roll)
"Sacramento Area!"

Send me a PM when you get here. There is a good sport area 30 miles from Sacramento. Check out Auburn in the Routes database, there's some good info on it there. Other than that, what the other guy said is pretty accurate. Consumnes is pretty lame though, in my opinion.

Cheers,
Dave

edited to add that Lover's Leap, Phantom Spires and Sugarloaf are 1.5 hours from Sacramento. Lots of other Tahoe areas as well.

I don't mean to nitpick, but this drives me up the wall. Oh hell, I do mean to nitpick!

It is COSUMNES. It has ONE N, not two. Pronounced

Coe Some Ness (not 'con soom ness')

The routes database contains inaccurate information to the point I couldn't even find the area (cause I spelled it correctly!)

Just doing my part to raise the educational level! Spelling errors in a post are one thing...

I'll be damned, you're right Dingus! I didn't believe you, but a google search quickly convinced me.

To reiterate:

Cosumnes River Gorge is pretty lame in my opinion.

Word on the street is you get your car broken into...

Holy Frig! Don't forget Donner Summit, crack climbing heaven. You could spend a lifetime just working the problems there. Maybe an hour and a half from Sac. The Leap, Sugarloaf and Phantom Spires also are killer.
Hope your a skier too, you'll get some of the deepest & steepest anywhere. "Sierra Cement" rules, almost no avalanche danger in the Sierra, ALMOST!!

www.sonorapassclimbing.com

not too far away if you are hitting lower elevation areas, otherwise Tahoe is closest quality.

yup, took me 1:30 to get there and that was with all the gawking and not knowing where to go being my first time up that aways.

plus yosemite is fairly close. i made it to the gate in 2:30 thanks to some good shortcuts provided to me by dingus

having just moved her myself i still don't really know where everything is and still have many places to check out

am always looking for new people to climb with, want to learn some aid stuff too
