I was at the base of EL Cap to the right of the Nose a few days ago (for the first time) and noticed some smooth drilled holes that were 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. Below the big holes were smaller holes, most of which had rusted hardware in them. What were these holes for???

They were there long before 1988. What they are is: a long time ago
there was a party going up on what is now "The Real Nose". The party
was a group of three engineering profs and the holes were drilled by
them in order to set up a new hauling contraption. The holes at the
base mark the high point for the party after 9 days of effort.
