J-Tree sounds good but how about someplace closer? I was thinking Texas but if the mob wants J-tree, then I will have to save up money. Please respond.

I'd like to hit up J tree and red rocks, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to go if we decide to go else where.

Hey all you midwest folk. My buds and I will be at the climbing comp. in Rochester, MN at Prairie Walls on Dec. 6th. $30 entry fee. 1-4 is comp. 12 the doors open. Hope to meet some of you maybe? I'm also heading to my parents' place for Turkey tomorrow up in Moorhead, MN. If anyone is up for doing a little gym climbing at the Y there, then shoot me an e-mail...stugelsc@luther.edu later, Scott

Hmmm...........I seem to have time to "handle" this creation of mine now, due to Galyan's cutting back hours, and budget, until Dec.19th (that's when all the little buggers get off school for winter break). Iclimbtoo seems to have spammed us but also given us a vote on Red Rocks so I have mixed feelings about that.........just kidding. I would like to go somewhere where the airfare is cheap. There is no way in hell that I will be taking my car on another road trip so soon after the one this summer. I drove from Chicago to Portland and back; I did all the driving. In addition, flying would be cheaper and more time saving. Stupid gas prices.......... Here are the ideas so far for the Jan trip: 1 vote for Red Rocks 1 vote for J-Tree 1 vote for Texas or anywhere south ( that's me baby, yea) 0 votes for Martha's Vineyard Why is the word vote pluralized when you use the number 0? Zero is not more than one, so it cannot be a "plural" number. Hmmmmmm......something to think about while I belay kids today at Galyan's. Enuf babbling, get to voting. And please help me with the leg work for finding the cheapest flights because that will be a major contribution to where we might go for Jan. Laters.

On another note, check out the thread on whether the type of shoe matters. I think it's a pretty heated debate.

I saw that shoe debate, I didn't even want to get in on it. I don't know if flying would be cheaper...we'd need to rent a car and each get a ticket. I'll look into it. edit: Ok well I checked Southwest because normally they're pretty cheap, and round trip Chicago to Las Vegas is 158.

Southwest. Ah. Ok, let's just see who can find the cheapest tix and someone else can calculate gas price. And who's voting? I don't see any votes............ Laters.

ok here it is. if we went to red rocks, leaving from chi-town it would be approxiamently 1624 miles to get there. assuming we get 25 miles to the gallon and guessing gas prices will be somewhere around 1.59, it will be about $105 one way. so with $260 in gas(round trip plus another $50 for miscellaneous driving) divided between 4 or 5 people, gas would cost about $42-65 per person. keep in mind this is all a rough estimate!! this seem about right? p.s. one more vote for red rocks :D dan

Dan, thats about what I got too. But what are we going to drive that gets 25 to the gallon and holds 4-5 people? If you fly we'd need to rent a car. So there's some money. Here are a few +/-'s I can think of: Fly: +'s more time to climb if someone has to leave early we can drop them off at the airport more time to climb don't have to site in a car -'s probly a little more expensive no 'road trip feel' pay for rental car (probly about 300/week for a minivan) I figure a van we all squeze in. Drive: + Cheaper we have a car if the weather sucks we can drive to J tree - Time to drive tired when we get there So flying the price is 158 for plane tix + 50 for car (6 people) + 40 (gas) +20 (food) + lodging (13/night camping or however much a hotel is) for a total of about 300. Driving is 65 (gas round trip) + 20 (food) + Lodging probly = about 120 As far as the driving costs go, when I made my trip in March there were 5 of us in a van and it cost us each 260, we went to J-tree and Red Rocks. But there is no way we're borrowing my moms van again. I'm voting for either one, but Red Rocks will probly be cheaper

sweet - a j-tree plan.. Maybe I'll finally get to meet all you "chicago locals" on the other side of the country.. I'm planning on heading up there mid-jan already. My dad lives about 30 minutes from j-tree, so I try to "VISIT" him once or twice a year :-) Of course, now when I go out there, I see him about 10% of the actual time I'm there..

In reply to: So, we need to decide on whether we are flying out there still? And i'm not a trad climber(yet) so are there sport routes out in J-tree or RR's? There is some sport climbing, but obviously FAR more trad. There are also quite a few places that have walkoffs for setting up TR's. Check out http://www.climbingjtree.com/rock/ - you can do a search of routes by sport or tr, and even further filter by rating and area.

wait so are we going to J-tree or red rocks? J tree is mostly trad, where red rocks has multi pitch sport. I was thinking red rocks for now for the cheaper flights etc.

Ok. Where the hell do you live that you only have to pay 1.59 or so for gas? It's about 1.80 around here. Anyways, I came across another idea: Moab or St. Georges, Utah. It'll be about 50/60 during the day; it gets cold at night but warms up after sunrise. The cheapest flight leaving O'Hare (on Spirit Airlines) to Las Vegas is about $125 but we must leave on Jan 3rd and be back by the 28th or before. That's the cheapest flight I can find. If any of you guys can find out how much flights cost out of DuPage Airpotr, let me know because they are suppossed to be cheap. Anyone have any other ideas? If we do decide to drive, I choose not to drive. I'd rather get drunk on the road. I need to know by the 14th of December because I need to request my Jan. days off by the 15th. Thanx guys!!!! Laters.

hey ya'll: i'm new to the thread, but i'm a midwest climber as well. anywhoo, i'm headed to climb in austin from the 26th through the 28th, and i could be persuaded to stay longer. looking at a place called reimers. http://www.texasclimbers.com/crags/reimers/ i can also be persuaded to head towards hueco tanks after the 28th (day my partner leaves). i'll be doing sport climbs. i'm comfortable leading 9's cleanly and am a 10 climber for the most parts. peace, CF
