i would give up just about anything for climbing. its the only thing i really like doing. nothing is better than clipping the last clip on a long sport climb. or anchering in on the last pitch of a multi pitch route.

there are things more important than climbing. Mainly, sailing, regattas and other events. I spend most of my summer weekends on a boat, racing/crewing. And that's what's important to me. Sailing

isn't sailing a yuppie sport?

I love climbing. I actually met my wife climbing and we climbed together for 10 plus years. Now she's not into it anymore (she was leading 5.12b...good ole times) but if we argue is generally because I want to go climb, or becasue I''m home late from a climbing day (hey I had to send that route honey!)

I'm taking my kids climbing now, (I will need a reliable partner for the future..lol) they seem to enjoy it, and I want them to grow up loving the outdoors.

Climbing is not the end all be all of life, if you think that it is then you have not lived a fulll life.

but ultimately it is not the purpose of living.

I'd ask "What then IS the purpose of living," but since you have no idea either, I won't.

I HAVE sacrificed career and spent relationship points on climbing. I live where I live so that I may climb. I have turned down job offers that would take me away from the mountains. I have almost no non-climbing friends.

Cheers,

As far as personal endeavors go I would say there is only one thing to distract me from climbing, THE MILE! Nothing comes close to tearing into the final 100m of the mile and your body feels like it is a solid block of lactic acid and the finish line doesn't seem to be getting any closer. I am never more centered than during the mile, I can almost feel all the different molecules moving around my body.
Any Milers out there?
Run free or die! :D

Funny, I thought you were the guy who bashes running all the time. Am I misremembering?

Nope, not a miler, though I did set a mile PR last night. Don't ask, you wouldn't be impressed, but I'm pretty happy about it. Going for my first 1/2 marathon on Oct 25th, though, with no goal other than finishing.

Don't listen to him, Jay's hard on everybody. I have complete sympathy for you. My wife gets all upset whenever I use that word, too.

I have, over the course of a long climbing career, been so obsessed with it that I lost a few very nice girlfriends because of it. It became a standard refrain "it's either climbing or me". When that happened, well the g/f just sorta disappeared from my scene. But after climbing for many years a bit of burnout crept into it and I found other high intensity activities to take their place.

Bike racing replaced climbing for a number of years. Met another g/f who I taught how to climb, where upon climbing became my focus for the next 4 years or so, then back to cycling, skiing, they all are great ways to get my yayas going. But one thing I have found, whether it was in cycling or climbing, g/fs who did the same things as I did created a situation which usually led to me lowering my level of climbing or riding to do it as a couple. Over time this would lead to subtle resentments on my part, since I was not doing it at the level I enjoyed the most. It's sorta like being a climbing or skiing instructor, you're always teaching others the basics and only on days off do you get to climb at the level you are used to climbing. But since it's a day off, being at the crags has to be replaced by chores you don't get done during the week, and before you know it you're own skills begin to suffer. I know this sounds like a worst case scenario, but from my own experience, which is based on working 5 or 6 days a week during the season. YMMV of course but for me it was probably why I would find new ways to bring risk and intensity to my life. But whats really cool, I always come back to climbing cause its been such a good passion in my like. Ok..nuf said

On a side note..the g/f I taught how to climb, well we broke up cause she became a better climber then me and I was cramping her climbing style..LOL..I guess a bit of qud pro quo is always in order.

cheers all

Pat

Reminds me of a neighbor who was arguing with his wife all of the time. He was always walking out after those yelling back at her, "I'm going down to the bar for Christ's sake!"

Climbingforchrist, who are you to tell what someones be all end all of life is? It varies per person and their situation, to some it is. There is no purpose to life but to live it to its full extent, do something every day that scares you, makes you happy or both and at the end you need to ask yourself has anything I've done today made my life better, and hopefully the answer is yes. Some go climbing and the answer to that question is in fact yes, so it might be thier purpose in life, the purpose to live it to its fullest extent, because in my mind life is just like a big joke, sometimes you get it, sometimes you dont and sometimes the joke is on you.

"is this really the blood of christ? This guy must have been hammered 24/7"
