hey man As far as i know it is ilegal. it is land belonging to the government Department of Transportation. if the OPP see you they may take you off and fine you, they may warn you or they may not do anything. it depends on their mood. it's not going to be enough to stop me though. see you on the high way.

Just to help you out we've cover off alot of the legal stuff about you question in this forum. rockclimbing_rayjay Where did you have in mind for climbing? I've spent a fair bit of time on 69 North of Sudbury. Just curious. [ This Message was edited by: downshift on 2002-03-06 19:05 ]

I've never seen your proposed climbing area, but going up right above a highway seems dangerous. No, you're not going to fall into traffic; traffic is going to go off the road looking up at you. CalTrans just put up some really big retaining walls in San Luis Obispo, California using fake rock face formboards for the concrete. It looks REALLY tasty, but I'm sure that distracting traffic would be illegal.

That'd be sweet! If the ministry of transportation started to cater to climbers... I wonder if the ontario rock climbers are populous enough to get together a petition for the ministry... Ideas? Christian

hey Cristian no matter how many climber there are, any petition will not work, you will have to talk to your local rep. besides, better not to draw attention to it for now. let it grow and then when it looks like oart of the local culture, petition it and you will have a better chance. Just make sure you don't take any stupid risks. Any tragic assident not will destroy any hope of having this sanctioned

The local mpp thing is a good idea, and if they started to allow roadside climbing I suspect that they'd want additional rules for it. I'd want a little larger area for belaying and bouldering. Christian

rockclimbing_rayjay Oh yeah I've looked at a lot of stuff that you mentioned and though about some of it. Actually I've done one boulder just south of Point Au Baril (when heading north on the left hand side in front of a crappy little shack). So there stuff in Gogama eh! I haven't been there in years I used to fish out that way. Maybe I'll have to make a return trip.

Different country but is done. When I was down in Montana just across the border from Alberta/B.C. there is a lake there called CANUSA (as it is close or spans the border). Anyway, right along the highway in rock that was drilled and blasted for the road there is a bunch of bolts and regularly climbers there. The only traffic problems were the semi trailers honking to scare you into falling. There didn't seem to be problems with the authorities down there. Go for it.

Personally, I do not really care whether it is illegal or not, I will still continue to climb the rad boulders that are between Sudbury, up to Espanola, and Manitoulin Island on the highway sides. This highway (Highway 6 I believe - could be mistaken) has many, many rad boulders on either side of the road. Many of these rocks are spray painted with many obscenities, though in my mind there is no matter. As long as I can climb them, I will enjoy the company of the rocks. There are many boulder problems especially between Espanola and Manitoulin Island. Many of them are kind of flaky, but they can still steal most of your day just trying to unlock there secrets. Have fun, but don't get caught!

I've climbed alot of rock faces on HWY 11 and i've been stopped by the OPP and well they seem more scared of me falling rather then giving me a fine. I've been caught at least 6 or 7 times by the OPP or local police. I would not suggest doing any climbing on the side of the Highways since the last time I was caught the officer took all my information and told me that if anyone seen me doing it again that I will get a fine. So there it is. I'm not telling anyone not to do it cause well I do have to admit that the rush is there. Having all that trafic pass you by and the amout of people that look at you not to mention the few people that stop to talk to you. Steven

Nope not at all, They said it was unsafe and that I should come down right away. I tried telling them that I did not know of any law saying that I could'nt climb there. When I asked what law am I breaking the cop just avoided my question.

I still think their no law against it. I can't find anything and when I ask police I know they srug their shoulders and say. "I think it probably illegal."

That's exactly what I got the first time I was pulled over when I asked what law am I breaking the shruged there shoulders and said that there is a law prohibting climbing on the side of the HWY's. I say do it cause there are some killer climbs on HWY 11 North of North Bay.

All of my research into the question has brought up no specific laws, but rather a bunch of maybes. You MIGHT be charged with trespassing, unlikely, you MIGHT be charged with some sort of traffic act violation, like some kooky causing a disturbance or blocking traffic etc... But the only place in the ontario laws that specifically mention climbing is for the glen and the niagra area, and while in court they may be able to get it extended the fact is the laws mention niagra in particular. I posted all that in another thread. Basically the police are looking out for your best interests, true, but they're also counting on some j@cka$$ who can't drive gawkin' at you and causing a big wreck up. Christian

I think your right on that because the times that I was pulled over they could not tell me what law I was breaking. They just didn't want me to fall I think. Well whatever the case was oh well. The climb was like a 5.6 so I don't think I would have fallen but I could have. I just wish they woudl have told me what law it was that I was breaking if any.
