Because the boulders are boat sized and there are so many that they are like boats floating on the bay. Plus, that's the name of the road it's off of... so I've been told. Pose question on www.seclimbers.org. Pandra Williams or L J would know best, Brad McLeod too.

I believe that one of the boulders that is now in a subdivision (now called the half-pipe), looks or looked like it used to be a BOAT, or was a dry dock for a boat. The road is named after the rocks...

Unfortunately, it is now going to be in someones backyard and is on private property...

Polarwid is correct. I read about it on some nonclimbing website once. I don't know which boulder it is supposed to be.

halfpipe is still there, it's at the very edge of the property and i understand it will be saved. there are no trees to the left of that picture now...

Hey Gina, how's it going?

As Gina mentioned, Boat Rock is located off of Boat Rock Rd. As to why Boat Rock Rd was given the name it was, no clue.

If you want to see some more pictures of the developer's clear cutting on his property, take a look at

http://www.seclimbers.org/access/2003/BoatRockDeforested.shtml

The Toe Jam boulder they use to contrast someone climbing with trees, and then without trees, is now gone. They blew it up into various sizes of rocks / gravel; never got to complete that problem. SCC property is safe, but unfortunately the SCC couldn't buy all of Boat Rock.

Unfortunately, the boulders shown in the pics now look like they're sitting in the middle of a desert. :(

raccoon caverns i think its right on the border of tenn and GA it wasnt as fun as other caves ive been to in that the first bit is lit and has gravel but then it goes deeper and is more true caveish but there were maybe 4 or 5 other groups of people in the cave at the same time so it was really noisy and imposible to sleep in some ways i wish i had hit up the comp instead but hindsight is 20/20

the fact is, in the eyes of the non rock climbing population, they're just rocks. it doesn't get much more useless than that. they really are not doing anything bad in the eyes of 99% of the people. 7.8 acres were bought by climbers, and the entire thing could've been bought with a little foresight on the part of climbers who would just go, boulder, and not pay any attn. to the external world and what the f was going on... i understand that the contractors mentioned they wouldn't tear down the rock (if you bleieved this, you were being naive) but they would not have been used by climbers anyway... there are much worse things going on in the world. it's stupid to get angry at the contractors, but it's productive to learn from this and preempt the next confiscation of your favorite crag...
