I just bought half ropes and was wondering if I can use one pear shaped biner with both ropes for an Italian Hitch. Do I have to use one biner for each rope? I own a reverso but if I dropped it...

Interesting question! I would probably (never tried this) use 2 biners as, I believe, the knots would conflict with eachother on the same biner. It would also make sense to me that they would be rubbing up against eachother. Again, I'm just guessing on this one. I've used half ropes quite a bit. I've used the Italian 'Munter' hitch a good dozen times. I've never combined the two. Therefore, this is just an semi-educated guess. If I remember, I'll try it later today to see how it works. -Jason :D

It is perfectly acceptable to use a single Italian (Munter) hitch for the two ropes on one biner, or one on each of two biners.....however, with the two biner system, it is possible for one system to block the operation of the other, or add friction to the movement, and even lock it up. I'd do a little experimentation on the ground, and see your preference.

I've rappelled with doubles using a munter on a single biner, works fine since the ropes don't rub much cause their moving at the same time throughout the rap. I've never used/ seen it used for belaying with doubles. Might make things difficult I'd think. But it would be interesting to see!!

i run on doubles. if i were going to belay off a munter hitch, i'd make sure to use my Petzl William biner, since it's the biggest locker i have. i'd try to only use one, but i might use two depending on how comfortable it felt.

I've never tried it, but I think it's a good idea to separate the two hitches a little bit, so that they don't interfere with each other.

I've used a simple Munter hitch of both ropes on a shared single carabiner to belay the second. Worked fine. I don't know of any safety issues with it.

I just learned something new too. Thanx all. It hasn't been mentioned yet, but I always carry a backup belay device. -Jason :D
