How many of you back up cam slings (the sewed ones) after 8 - 10 years of use?

Get em REPLACED. And probably more like 4-5 years if you actually use them.

i'll second that. after the sling starts to show serious wear or after about 5 years, send 'em in and get them replaced! @ about $5.00 a cam or less, its well worth it.

Thanks for the advice.
I thought backing them up with 5 mm kevlar cordelette. But where would I get them replaced?

Fish Products replaces cam slings. You can color-coordinate by sending your own webbing or use his limited color selection. Here's a link:

sometimes local gear shops will do 'em. manufacturers almost always do them....barring that, Yates and Fish are probably your best bet.
good luck finding a place!

Mountain Tools http://www.mtntools.com also reslings cams and delivers to Canada although it will cost in shipping. Best to make it a big order.

I'll second Yates. They do a perfect and quick job. It was pretty cheap too. There's a few choices you'll have to make like color, spectra, double-loop, dog-bone. I think the regular loop (Like on a camalot) was $3.50 each. Most climbers can get the entire rack done for under $50 w/ shipping.

Thanks again for all of you advice. I think i'll just back them up with kevlar cordelettes for this season (it starts in only a couple of weeks...it's been a long winter!...) and get them changed next winter.

In 3 weeks? I doubt it takes less than six weeks and I already have a trip planned in 4. But I will get some info about that, to see if there's some kind of emergency cam sling repair hospital :)
