I was thinking about taking some beginner climbers to Poway Crags in a couple of weeks.
I heard that the fires ran through that area. Is it still ok for climbing there?

It got burned pretty bad up there. I went up there about 2 weeks after the fires to check things out. I check a lot of the bolts, which seemed pretty solid to pull on, but they were all black. The rock itself was jacked up. I tried leading a climb and ended up pulling holds off left and right. The whole surface of the rock was flaking off everywhere. The spot I picked seemed the least damaged too.
I am no expert at judging this sort of thing at all, but it seemed pretty unclimable over all to me.

try mission gorge... skyline arete (5.6) That's a prime place for beginners. Bomber bolts for anchors + very nice scenery.
