Ok, I've never been to RMNP, but I'm planning to hit it this summer. What's the deal with backcountry permits? Is BC camping allowed?

For example, if I wanted to set a base camp for a few days below Hallets or Shark's Tooth and hit a different route each day, is that allowed?

I've only been there once, but I think that the BC permits only allow you to camp in established BC Sites. I was only there for 2 days though, so my word might not be fact. Have fun though, RMNP is beautiful.

You probably won't be able to establish a base camp below the peaks you've mentioned. Bivy only.

Try this link:

Look fir the PDF file.

I'm sure someone on this site will be able to help you more.

For most of the places you'd want to BC, you can only get a 'bivy permit'. No tents, put all your crap away out of sight to go climb. You can often talk the ranger into 2 nights, saying you want to bivy before and after your route.
