The Difference?: CONVERSATION I: Sporty 1: Yo, dude! I pulled that side-crimper with two fingers, and by the way, can you see my toned and ripped back-muscles through this tight lycra singlet? And what a long pitch. It must be at least 23 meters!? Sporty 2: Go bare-topped like me dude, and yeah, the side-pull is wicked, isn't it. And my dick is really big! Sporty 1: Mine too... Sporty 2: Dude, there's a couple of chicks bouldering down there. Get your shirt off and let's pull some Gaston moves... Sporty 1: Wow dude, now my dick is really big. F*** this shirt... CONVERSATION 2: Traddy 1: That pitch was really great. Under-protected, but still a great pitch! Traddy 2: Sure was. Reminded me of pitch 24 on The-Tottally-Awesome-Big-Face Mountain in Tibet. Traddy 1: Yes it did actually. I remember when I did that with Traddy 3. Christ he was scared on that one. Mind you, he did wear a 57kg rucksack at the time. Great pitch......(sigh!) Traddy 2: Yes, Traddy 3 is some character (laughs). I remember after we had done The-Even-More-Totally-Awesome-Big-Face Mountain in Chile.....and afterwards we went to this whore-house and as his fingers were worn to the quick and he had frostbites, he.........

In reply to: Other things we talk about are: the latest lycra fashion trends, what kind of hair products work the best at the crag, if people really actually still climb slabs, the latest diet trends etc     You beat me to the lycra trends! It's been so long since I've done a sporto weekend. One thing I've noticed big time is that sportos do not party NEARLY as well as traddies. Traddies will put back the beer and smokes around the campfire like pro's....sporto's pound back Red Bull and protein shakes and look down on us traddie drunks and talk about how if we just quit smoking and drinking so much we might stand a chance at cranking hard and being so rad like THEY are    .

Climbers talk smack. Period. Sport or trad or bouldering or aid or anything in between. Doesn't matter what your discipline is. All climbers are hard-wired to talk smack. Ben, I'm a sport climber but I'll still talk to you ;) And I know you can think of a certain hard-kore traddie who sprays venom like Lower Yosemite Falls...

* Traddies will put back the beer and smokes around the campfire like pro's......sporto's pound back Red Bull and protein shakes and look down on us traddie drunks...* We just like to save some of that athleticism for our girlfriends...sounds like the after-sunset fun is pretty much limited to beer and cigarettes for the "traddies"... But then again, when you're hanging in aiders all day I can see where the circulation to certain areas might get a little constricted...

I like to talk about the mechanical bull at the Stampede. Ever been to the Stampede? I've never been there but this one time, this one girl who had a tiwn sister who was friends with this guy who dated the other sister went to the Stampede and I heard about it so I was wondering if sport climbers or trad climbers like to ride the mechanical bull.

Those who love indoor climbing yet can't stand outdoor climbing should be slapped immeditaly and the forced to lick a sumo wrestlers gooch. Then agian they could all stay inside on the weekends and not crowd the wonderfull outdoors they dislike so much. Anyway, around the campfire it seems we end up making stupid jokes, drinking beer and generally making fun of ourselvs. Just like everyone else, I guess.

I do both. Sport and Trad. I like both for different reasons. After sport climbing I talk about: Analytic Philosophy, Topology, Combinatorics, Literature, Geometric Analysis, Politics..... just about anything but... climbing. Unless its, I want to go back and redpoint, so and so.

>After sport climbing I talk about: >Analytic Philosophy that sport climbing could induce one to talk about analytic philosophy goes explains everything wrong with sport climbing  does trad cause you to talk about pragmatism? bouldering cause you to talk about continental? without a doubt aiding necessarily would induce the sanest of people to spout effusively about medieval. and mountaineering would have to involve a discussion of 19th century german idealism and wtf they meant by _absolute_

You bet.... and after I free solo, its nothing but Nietsche. Along the same lines, when I am climbing trad, I sort of see myself as the construction worker from hell. Its all about quality work in less than optimal conditions. I will go back and do a climb over and over till I get the placements to all be bomber and the rope line as straight as an arrow. I don't really focus on climbing, I focus on the craft. The people that I climb trad with are signficantly more macho (both men and women) than the people I climb sport with. I think sport climbing is good clean innocent fun.
