In reply to: Well Well...another consequence of insufficient hygiene...!!! Actually, it can be genetic. Each persons' imune system handles fungus differently. Some people have greater immunity to the little invaders. I used lysol religiously for years. I tried Lamisil before too, and powders. Removing the toenails was my last resort. Hope it works. If not, oh well, people will just have to learn to live with my toes. :-) Cheers

How many of you have toe fungus from climbing shoes? i've got a nasty one which spreads under my toe nails and eats the skin attaching the nail to the toe flesh... and it seems to be spreading to my other toes... i have 4 out of 10 infected toes. Doctor says it's not from climbing shoes... but i think so. Anybody else had a similar problem?

Sorry about your feet...sounds like you have "Candida onychomycosis" or a fungus that effects the toenail causing it to seperate from the nailbed. Fairly common and easily treatable with over the counter drugs such as lamisil or prescribed drugs such as miconazole, I am sure your doctor told you this. This type of fungus comes from many sources such as repeated atheletes foot, shoes that are too tight, sweaty feet and not washing your feet after a climb. Although you can get rid of the fungus on your feet it has more then likey infected your shoes and the advent of a repeat infection is fairly high. Get some antibacterial powder or spray and subject your shoes to a good "dry" cleaning. If that does not work and the problem persits get rid of the shoes. What a topic eh! Oh yeah and on a side note you can also get this fungus if you are a diabetic or have HIV, but this is not the normal source for the infection.

Sorry about your luck dude....it sounds like you're at the point now that you need a prescription from your doc. Hope you have a prescription plan...3 months worth of that stuff will cost you over $700!!! There isn't a generic version yet of the Lamisil. Wearing shoes that are too tight can cause it from what I read...also wearing too much toe nail polish..so lay off that stuff already!

There are some new prescription drugs to get rid of nail fungus as well. But I wouldn't say they are as easily treated as a skin fungus, for example. And with skin fungal infections you really have to be good about applying the medication consistently, or else it just liingers and comes back. Don't forget. A fish stick is neither a fish nor a stick. It is a fungus.

I've had it for years. The toenails get really thick and ugly. Since I broke my ankle in an ABS comp and had already met my insurance deductable, I had my toenails removed. The doc nubmed my toes then took a pair of plyers and ripped them off. They grow back in about a year. I'll be on Lamisil for a while too to make sure the fungus is killed off. The advice my doc gave me was to blow-dry the toenails after showering. It's the moisture that feeds the fungus. Also, spray your shoes with Lysol now and then, and use a foot powder. Well Well...another consequence of insufficient hygiene...!!! I carry around a bottle of lysol around in my pack or car so that I can spray as needed. Does wanders in preventing to fungual and bacterial infections. Why do you think the bowling allies and climbing gyms always spray their rental shoes?? Well, as for the fungus, a dermatologist is highly recommended...2 even (for multiple opinions). If all else fails, give me a holler at my email with your symptoms / pictures, and I will get back to you with some recommended OTC drugs.

There is some topical stuff called dry-sol, which is perscription, that keeps your feet from sweating as much. It works well for preventing ogre foot. The idea of having your nails removed sounds painful...and unpleasant...
