Hi climbers, i have sometimes imagined the following tragicomic situation. Let suppose your building is burning, and you are not able to run downstairs because of the flames and smoke in the previous floors. So, you put on your harness, take you rappel device and rope, find some bomber rappel anchors , and you are ready to save yourself from being cooked rappeling your own home building !!!! So, instead of waiting those firemen with their ladders to reach you, you just make a self rescue. You can even become a hero by evacuating some of your neighbors...jejeje Did this crazy idea ever come to your mind? JUAN

I actually have due to the way my apt is set up. If there was a fire in the stairwell our official option is to go out to the 7th floor balcony and walk through the doors to another apt. Except the doors are bolted shut. So the thought has crossed my mind to just take off over the edge. I guess I spend too much time on the balcony day dreaming.

My friends live on the top floor of some old flats out in the west end of Glasgow. One evening their downstairs neibhour came to the door to use the phone: she'd locked herself out and needed to call a locksmith. The guys told her not to worry and totally astonished her when Dave anchored to the window frame and abseiled in through her window to open the door from inside! Suppose there was also some of the guys absieling from a third floor balcony at the party a few weeks ago, but that was just for the heck of it and probably doesn't count. No I had never thought of that, but I like the idea. I have had some other crazy ideas. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I find this kinda funny because I know some people who for fun rapelled out of their apartment building (11 floors), luckly they didnt get caught, but they used their fridge as and anchor LoL I think that would make me a little nervious

This is not a good thing for me to think about, I already want to carry my rope and harness with me wherever I go, and this gives me really good reason. Arete

There is a post in this forum, god knows where it is now, but it talked about how this guy downclimbed out of his apartment to find help. Later, when he came back, he climbed back up the building to help save his family which was still in the building. Its on this website somewhere, but im too lazy to find it.

Actually it's pretty funny but what was described is the exact plan my family has for getting me out of the house in case of a fire. I live in the third floor attic and right now I have a rope coiled up and anchored to my bed and my climbing gear not too far away. I thought my dad was joking when he suggested this, and hey if something were to ever happen it would be hilarious seeing the paper the next morning with me rapelling out of the burning house with a conspicuous smile on my face.

Seems fair. Gotta be safer than jumping out the window onto a mattress! Leave that to the bouldering contingent! Dougie

OHHH MAN that is trippy. I always think that. I drive by a building sometimes and say to myself " That balcony is perfect for a rappel in a fire. This is the Twilight Zone

PMI acually makes a system specifically designed for that purpose, it comes with a small diameter high heat rope (a climbing rope can melt as it passes windows of burnig apts below) and a special rapp device and quick harness (You just step in). In my job as a remodeling contractor I have to bring buildings up to fire codes and install several different systems. If you are ever going to rapp form a building, MAKE SURE that your anchors are TOTALLY SOLID!!! A balcony rail landing on you, after you fall the last two stories, is just adding insult to injury to injuries. Not a good thing! Jeff

My buddies actually consider practising rapping down from this ones attic, where we plan to build our homewall. They have a circular satirweal and it is inside the house, so we dont have to worry about cops
