Bouldering is what you do to warm up for some real climbing.

In reply to: There is something different among the scenes. No? Welcome to RC.com. You should really change your sig line though. Perhaps instead of.... "too rad for trad" "no nads for trad" would serve you better. Curt

Bouldering is cool. Sport climbing is cool. Trad climbing is cool. But will any of them ever be as cool as curling?

Bouldering - cool since birth... Trad belongs to math prof's in nuthugger short-shorts with rank b.o. Sport is for lycra-lovin, spray-lords with nothing better to do, ego-issues, and no power. The boulderers in my area get all the lovin'... don't they everywhere?

I look at the "fued" between the different climbing disciplines like i do at the ratings on climbs, who cares, as long as your climbing what does it matter if its sport, trad, or boudering? there all cool

The answer is sport and trad is already cooler and more importantly better than bouldering. Bouldering is like climbing at the gym vs. climbing in the outdooors when compared to REAL climbing such as sport and trad... even a tr climber scores more points with me than a boulderer. There are only four good reasons to boulder... (1) you dont have a partner on that given day so you decide to boulder instead, (2) you want to practice power moves and develop skills for when you're on a real climb (3) you're a p*ss and scared of heights, or (4) you cant afford all the cool gear we get to use and or are uncapable of learning the skills one must possess to be able to use this gear correctly. I understand that these are all good reasons not to trad and sport climb on a given day, but honnestly people, we all know that bouldering should not even be called climbing b/c in order to climb, one must get their feet off the ground right?

I can't believe I'm seeing this thread again. Why do people care so much about image? If you're trying to impress someone, then you're setting yourself up for a life of failure, all in persuit of a worthless mirage.

ok, it's time to rant... [rant] rant #1: Posting of new topics should be limited to persons with atleast XX number of posts already (where XX is a consensus chosen number that signifies board competancy. I say 15 or 20) rant #2: How is it that Sport climbers and Trad climbers, who are usually at each other's throats on this site, team up together as if they are the same "discipline" (see rant#3) when Boulderers get thrown in the mix. My enemy's enemy is my friend? rant #3: what's this business about "disciplines of climbing"? Climbing is the part where you hold onto the rock and move (preferably upwards). The trad/sport/bouldering has to do with protection and location, but its all climbing. (note: "aid climbing" = widely accepted cheating) rant #4: anyone else tired of climbing being "cool"? I am. I'm tired of birthday parties for rugrats in the gym, and pot heads on belay making the news when they drop someone. I'm tired of Old Spice and Nissan comercials with "rock climbers" who are either on a TR with one cam on their harness, or who wuss out when they get to "the rock". I'm tired of car commercials using climbing (Nissan) to make their cars seem "trendy and useful" to urbanites who wouldnt know a 4x4 trail if it hit them in their starbucks filled face. rant #5: I want the "Not For Climbing" label taken off toy 'biners. Let people try it, fall, break their leg, and then never try climbing again... that will get rid of a lot of the people from rant#4, and maybe get a few of the nooB's out of my crags. [/rant] ahhh.... I feel better.

trad and sport already are cooler. The only reason why more people do not do trad is because it is more dangerous and expenisve.

Whoa! Hit a nerve. Thanks for all the responses. However, I was not trying to start a debate over which form is legit and which is for the nad-less. (on that note, I do all three) Rather, I was trying to get insight into how each community gets its vibe. Why is Bouldering COOL and the others not? Grab someone off the street and take them to the scene of each activity. Trad Wonderland - They would see two specs high up on a wall, away from everyone. The sound of gear fumbling around the climber as they pick through a rack for the right piece. They seem to like to be alone and suffer. Kind of like trench coat kids at high school, never quite fit. Sport Cliff - Much like the Trad scene, a climber toils away through a sequence on his own. However, at the base, a collection of others. Some talking about the latest windproof tech fiber others discuss the holding-power of wire gate biner over that of a solid gate. However most ignore each-other. Except for Johnny Lycra who loves sprayin' beta to the entire wall. There are a lot of rules regarding the ethics of an ascent. Very structured "I'm the boss of you" scene. A.K.A. - anal. (A good thing when it comes to safety) Boulder field - More inviting scene. Groups scattered around in clusters working out sequences together, move by move. When one falls, many sets of hands reach out to catch you. Why does each realm attract certain "types"? Don't deny the truth.

re-rant 1- Are you the "boss" of this forum? 2-Each are afraid of the other. Must posture. 3-You are right climbing IS climbing. But the scenes are different. 4- WRONG Climbing in general is not cool! Look around you. 5- People are stupid. No label would = broken legs. "YOUR" crags will be shut due to lawsuits.

In reply to: (note: "aid climbing" = widely accepted cheating) Wow... aiding not climbing eh? it would be safe to say that this Okie has never stood in etriers hanging off a questionale placement. As for Bouldering being cool... the funnest thing about bouldering is the social aspect. I guess that makes it "cool". you really can't go to a crag with a dozen people and enjoy it together With Bouldering its like a party, everyone standing around watching others. good fun

Yep, when all you little boulders grow up you'll want to move on to the big stone, I really can wait to see some of these strong boulders cranking FFA up some bigwalls and start setting new standards. This is not a sport it's a way of life and to feed that life you have to move over the stone.

Yo, kid, haven't ya heard? Most of the really inspirational climbers -- Caldwell, Hill, Das Uber-Bros -- do it all. Trad, sport, bouldering ... Sharma has even led the Rostrum Roof in Yosemite (really long boulder problem with widgets and a rope-thingy). Here's my opinion on specializing so much that you ignore all other forms of climbing: If you're not seriously good at one the one aspect that you decide is cool, then you're cheating your self. Okay, I see if you climb, say, 5.12+ trad and you are pumped to send a .13- crack, you ignore the other aspects for awhile. But, if you're only leading 5.11 on gear, isn't it a little silly to ignore sport and bouldering, which will just make you stronger? Likewise, a V7 boulderer is ... a pretty freakin' average boulderer. I know this all too well myself. If I went around spraying "Bouldering is the only cool way to climb" I'd be condemning myself to be both average and small-minded. The only thing I can say for myself in this sport is that I am moderately accomplished in several styles. And I have fun learning new stuff from each and applying it to other areas. When some dude who isn't even talented tells me that there's only one cool way to climb, I can't help but think he's missing out.
