Howdy, San Diego is in the desert, the closest snow in the Winter is in Big Bear or Idylwild 2-3 hours away and the closest Ice Climbing is in Lee Vining near Mammoth Lakes about six hours away. So winter conditions require a considerable drive. There is some winter moutaineering on San Jacinto and San Grogornio, but it is mostly training type stuff that doesn't have a whole lot of technical difficulty. With that being said, the climbing in San Diego itself is OK. We've got a few local crags and some great bouldering at both Santee and Mt Woodson. A few of the local areas are great, but you'll have to move here and hang out with the local crowd to get the beta on them. What we do have is a plethora of world class rock within 3 hours driving time. Here is a list of the areas that make a pleasant weekend trip and you can look them up on this site to check the routes. For Sport Climbing: 1. Williamson Rock (Summer only) 2. New Jack City 3. Barstow/Apple Valley 4. Malibu 5. Big Bear (Holcomb Valley) For Trad: 1. Joshua Tree (4000+ routes). You can climb in Josh for years and not get bored. 2. Tahquitz/Suicide (At about 1hour and 45 minutes driving time this is a very comfortable day trip.) With a little bit longer drive (5-6 hours) you can be in the Eastern Sierra and the opportunities there are endless for all types of rock and the Sierra are a big range with numerous 14'ers that have all kinds of technical rock ranging from the rather moderate routes on Whitney, to the more serious free climbs of Temple Crag, Mt Russel, Keeler Needle, etc. The Sierra's could keep you busy for the rest of your life. Finally, Southern California has some drawbacks (See: traffic, and cost of living) but the quality of life is what you make it, right. Hope that helps.
