I imagine that 513 is actually far far less than the true number of climbing areas in this state. Though that has nothing to do with the point you're trying to make. :)

In reply to: Ok, I'm from California and I know there is a Ton of climbing here and its all great. Well, most of it's great, but not all of it! In reply to: are there really 513 different climbing areas in the "Golden" state? At least, think of all the "secret" areas down near you in San Diego...at least five or six come to mind immediately and I don't even live there. In reply to: For instance .... is Generator Crack of Yosemite really a climbing area ??? or is it just a climb ?? True, some areas of the route database, particularly some of the larger areas are formatted poorly - any suggestions? In reply to: The database on this site is soooo deceptive that the entire rest of the country will be moving here just for all the rock ... and then us natives wil have to stand in line at our favorite "Areas". Unlikely, the rest of the country moves here for many reasons, but rock climbing isn't one of them. As for waiting in line at favorite areas, two words - walk further- ninety percent of the traffic at most crags is on routes that require a minimal approach. Early and late sesaon and midweek are pretty sure bets to avoid undue crowding. And don't forget the "secret" areas...

On the hike in to the new crag we are developing, literally, we pass by several other crags that all would take routes. California has its faults (no pun intended  ), a shortage of developable rock is not one of them.

i know what you mean about publishing all the climbing areas... some of the old crags you could depend on to be mellow, like Clarks, when i was last in CA, are now pumped chock full of people... ah well. at least, teh good thing for you is that most non-californians are all about the Valley until they know better : ) Plus... there was a message here about a shortage of developable areas... but there the undeveloped areas are definitely nice for a day of exploring...
