My Girlfriend and I are moving “out west” in a few months. I know Idaho is an amazing place, but we’ve never been there. What is your favorite town or small city? Here is my list of attributes in order of importance:

1) Quick access to at least o.k. climbing, and a few hours drive to amazing climbing. I enjoy all types of climbing (including ice) but I get really excited for alpine trad.
2) Nice looking town, good mountain scenery and cool people.
3) Decent economy or moderate growth potential (we are planning on opening a small business).
4) Moderate cost of living.
5) Population between 800 and 50,000 (approx.).

We also don’t mind if the town is “off the beaten path” or remote. Also, if you can think of a great town outside of Idaho, feel free to mention it.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Towns to consider:

1. Twin Falls – Dierkes Lake close to town, City of Rocks only 1.5 hrs.
2. Pocatello – climbing/boudlering right in town at Ross Park, Massacre Rocks only 45 min., City of Rocks about 2 hrs.
3. Idaho Falls area – sport just outside of town, Tetons ony 2 hrs.

Anywhere close to these towns and you will find enough sport climbing to keep you happy. The Sawtooths and Tetons are within easy driving distances from these areas with ice/alpine/trad in abundance. Idaho has quite a bit of climbing to offer.

Boise has many of the things you are looking for. However, it is a larger town, around 250,000 people in the valley. It is a very good place to open a small business though, we are still growing.

We have bouldering, sport, trad, skiing, biking, hiking, all within ten to thirty minutes. City of rocks and the Sawtooths are within a 2-3 hours drive.

We also have an excellent club scene, a small arts district, local semi-pro hockey team, a thriving university, and a HUGE variety of restaurants, and several top-friggin-notch brew pubs.

It doesn't get much better as far as I'm concerned.

I sound like the damn chamber of commerce. I guess I must like it here.

Drop a line if you come through and I'll show you around. I need friends.

I moved to Boise from Austria in 1993. It's a nice town. Lots of climbing close by and areas such as Riggins, Hells Canyon, the Sawtooth etc.. ony 2 to 3 hours away.

It does get pretty dry around here in the summer but if you want to you can climb year round.

Get ready for some culture shock going from NYC to Idaho. It's a little different out here in the west. It took me a while to adjust to SLC after moving here from DC. But, I love it. I hear Boise is pretty cool.

Look into Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, and Sandpoint in Northern Idaho. I have lived in S. Idaho and N. Idaho and much prefer Northern. The economy up here is growing and strong. You have some minor sport climbing in Post Falls and some small local crags in town, but with short drives you have some much better climbing. Spokane has several local crags....30 minutes away. Chimney Rock is about 1.5 hours away, there is plenty of Alpine/Trad climbing on all the surrounding mountains. Seven Devils is about 4 hours south and the Bugaboos in Canada is about 5 hours north.

OMG!

recommending someone move to twin falls or pocatello is just plain mean. both those places are worthless crapholes.

ketchum/sun valley - resort area and $$$, but gateway to the sawtooths.
boise - 300,000 people, but still not a big city feel.
coeur d'alene/sandpoint - outrageously beautiful. lots of climbing.
mc call - small town and small economy. beautiful w/ good climbing
moscow - artsy semi-liberal college town

places to avoid:
twin falls - boring as all hell and worthless.
pocatello/idaho falls - unless you're mormon, don't bother.
