assuming that we're talking about the same bill, it was introduced by a republican in OHIO who's apparently concerned with "improving recreational facilities and visitor opportunities on Federal recreational lands" damn, i wish i had my copy of desert solitaire with me - this thread needs some righteous sermon given my none other than ed abbey. here's the link to the bill. ... http://congress.org/....R.3283&congress=108

In reply to: Out of curiousity, does anyone know if this price has increased dramitically over the last year? The last backcountry permit I bought was only $5 but wasn't RMNP, it was for Arapahoe (?) just to the south. The reason I'm curious is I was wondering if fees would start to skyrocket since the parks are seriously hurting financially now. Many parks are laying off rangers and staff. I read where some were even halting most garbage pickups to save money. Federal spending for the national parks has been hurt in recent years. RMNP's website claims $15 for a backcountry permit. they haven't updated it for a while. i think many NP's charge $5, zion and grand canyon being two. they might've upped the fee as well.

FWIW, the bill that camhead and i are complaining about encourages an increase in all fees, plus the addition of new fees.

In reply to: 'My blood is bruised and borrowed. You thieving bastards. You have turned my blood cold and bitter, beat my compassion black and blue. Hope this is what you wanted. Hope this is what you had in mind. Cuz this is what you're getting. I hope you're choking. I hope you choke on this. Taken all I can, taken all I can, we(?) can take. Taken all you can, taken all you can feckin' take Got nothing left to give to you. Blood suckin parasitic little tick/blood suckin parasitic little tick Take what you want and then go. I HOPE YOU CHOKE!' and that my friends just about sums up my feelings on backcountry permit fees... JCS Agreed. Is there nothing a Tool quote can't explain perfectly?

In reply to: The sad thing about the whole fee-based programs, for our National Parks, is that this temporary progam was supposed to have ended several years ago, but the powers that be keep extending it. Gotta love the "Sunset Clause." It's the political equivalent of saying, Look over there. Take a nap.

The population is increasing. So is tourism. The 90's brought a prosperity which created and increased demand on our national treasures. All of that spells the need for more funding, not the same or less. Of all the taxes and fees that I face, I complain the least about those that support the places and things that mean something to me and my family. I can understand how others might disagree, that's just my take on it.
