so I got a hagboard, and I want to mount it somehow, trouble is, it is too wide to put above a doorway, so what should I do? also how far below the ceiling should the top of the hangboard be to prevent my head from hitting the ceiling?

If the hangboard is too wide for your door you should take it back and get a smaller one. It has to be in a doorway of some type. I have my hangboard in my kitchen doorway. It's about 3 inches from the ceiling, and yes, I do hit my head if I go up too high. You just have to be careful.

yeah a relative gave it to me so i can't return it and get a smaller one. Is there some way to just extend it out from a wall?

You could get some 2X4 pieces that match the width of the hangboard, and stack them behind it.

You will need to get some longer bolts than the ones that came with the hangboard, though.

How is it too wide for the doorway? Do you mean that the holes in the board don't match the placement of the studs? If so, this isn't a problem...

This is my hangboard in my room. As you can see I used a 2"X12" floor joist which I bolted into the studs. then I just used the manufacturer-provided lag bolts to secure it to the wood. You could just as easily use 3/4" plywood and it would have been a bunch cheaper. (ask the lumber yard to look at their scraps. they'll let it go for a dollar)

Now if by too wide you meant that it won't fit on that wall because the wall goes into a corner or something, then you will have to find another doorway. Try the closet, or somewhere in the garage.

Now about hitting your head...
...I think everybody hits their head every once and a while. But if you've got like cathedral ceilings over your doorway, I suggest using a ladder and getting rt where the board will be and pretending that you're doing a pull-up. that will show you how low it needs to be.
**caveman I hope that helps!**

you could always build a "box" on the wall to mount the hangboard.
Just have it match the size of your board plus about 2-3 feet to get it away from the wall and you're set. just make sure you mount it to the ceiling and wall good.

If you have a garage, are there exposed roof beams you can use?

Hang it above a closet.
