I will be in Victoria for a conference in a couple of weeks and have a day or two to kill beforehand. A friend of mine, another climber, and I are looking for some good hiking and/or climbing.

Is there anywhere in particular you would recommend we go? Is the climbing nearby Victoria good? Are there quality guide services available?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The climbing in victoria is mediocre. For a short day of climbing you can TR at Flemming Beach in Esquimalt. Mount Wells is another place located in Sooke. You can also pick up a guide book of Victoria at Vallhalla on Broughton Street for i think 12 bucks... For an easy hike, East Sooke Park is beautiful, and for a harder hike, i would go hike up Finlayson.
Hope this helps! have fun!

How about Mount Work?

We'll have two days, so I was thinking one day out in East Sooke Park and then we want do gain some elevation.

Mount Finlayson is pretty steep. you gain quite a bit of elevation. Keep in ming also that it is not a LONG hike, just really steep. Ive never been to Mount Work but that's probably just as good if not better.

and there's a 30m 5.8?? dihedral to face climb on Mount Finlayson that's kinda fun plus other smaller stuff. You can also hike up Mount Finlayson and go down the backside and hike for 12km along in Gowland Todd Park if you want. There's 4 developed routes there as well, but I wouldn't bother if you're only here for a couple of days. If I was going for a hike near town it'd probably be East Sooke though, and there's some small fun climbing there too. You can get both done in a day.

Across the valley from Mt Wells is Mt McDonald which has a couple of easier TR routes (5.7, - 5.9) on it. Just guessing that's what you might be after since you've been clmbing for a year. If you want to lead 10's then there those too.

About the last post, Mount work is a much longer hike than Finlayson, but not as steep + no climbing on Mount Work.

You should be able to find something fun to get on. Cheers

There's also a climbing area just off the highway heading . . .northwest. Can't remember what it's called, but I'm sure if you drop into Valhalla, they'll be able to give you directions. Or the climbing gym, Crag-X, which is just off Bay Street in the industrial area. They'd be able to point you in the right direction too.

Thanks everyone for all the information.

Mount Finlayson sounds really cool.

I think we may stick to hiking rather than climbing. Then we don't have to drag our gear or hire a guide or whatnot.

There is ok climbing at Mt wells and better climbing at Mt Macdonald (cinema crag). Sugarloaf also has some nice route, longer 45meters in length. You can pick up a guide book at Valhalla pure outfitters downtown for directions. I reccomend avaoiding flemming beach, its crowded with boulderers and not really worth going to anyway

Buying the guide would be a good idea. There are some fun climbs but most are short. Mt.Wells,MacDonald and Finlayson are all in the Langford /Goldstream area and only 15-20 min. out of town. East Sooke park is a great place to see the BC coastline and offers some climbing as well.
