In reply to: Well I can always climb there another week, just hope everyone living up there is ok. ...or a year or 2, if they close the area for rehabilitation. Was planning a trip their myself. They're already talking about closing the SoCal national forests for the season. If they close Charleston, too, we're screwed. Well, at least my tendinitis might have a chance to heal. -Jay

well, if you can find someone with a 4wd, theres always the Fire Wall, Trench Town, & Water World. They stay pretty cool during the summer. theres some other areas around.....but, the mountain is the best.

In reply to: Aaron quipped - In reply to: Yeah I was thinking Clark, but that drive from Vegas and then the hike, blah...Not that Clark isn't worth it, I was just looking for an easy week. So let's see, you did a triathalon and now the hike to Clark is too much? What are you light? Why don't you come visit the SB's and climb on some solid granite? How about you get the tour of the "40 foot slabs", after all isn't that what you said is all we have? Talk about a mean calf pump... Looking forward to seeing you, "I hate slabs but it's all I've got" LOL, I'll tell you what Chris, we can meet for a nice easy long training day anytime you want  Eh, I am on vacation and rightly want to do some relaxing. As for the SBs and granite... why would I go to the SBs for 40 foot slabs when I could go to the Valley which is about 3 hours closer? Anyways, if I ended up in SoCal, it would be Frustration and another crag I have been meaning to check out. Well that on top of surfing, kayaking, and riding from SB to Huntington. I have also been entertaining thoughts of doing the Big Bear loop up 30 and back down 38. Care to join me?

Update: The Robbers Fire on Mt. Charleston has spread westward toward the private homes and The Hood. The fire is approximately 1200 acres in size as of 6:00pm tonight (7/26/04). Firefighters expect to have the fire contained in approximately one week. The elevation is presenting some problems in fighting the fire. The mountain itself is closed until further notice.

Update: As of today (Wednesday), the Robbers Fire has spread to 1500 acres. The good news is that the fire has turned away from the private homes in Kyle Canyon (near the Hood). Also, fire crews have managed to get the fire about 20% contained. Favorable wind conditions and cool weather have helped keep the fire from spreading.

Is there any talk of the Hood being open for climbing this weekend? I know the roads are still closed, but if the fire is contained to a certain level is the public going to be allowed access?

In reply to: Update: The fire has been reduced to 290 acres, and is 40% contained as of 4:00pm on Wednesday. Huh?? You can't reduce the size of a wildfire!!! Also just so you guys know 40% actually means that bad boy is pretty much done. You might stll see smoke from interior bruning but they have a line around it. They just don't want to call it contained in case something happens- like a significant wind event or something. josh
