OK, for all my lip-flapping, I really should post a pic now and then! :P Part of my "climber in sea of nifty rock" phase: http://www.hillarydavis.com/...imbing/waterslip.jpg My biggest beef is that the talent just HAD to wear a shirt that was almost the same color as the rock. But since this is one of my fairly rare stranger-talent shots, I couldn't control that like I like to ;) Technical beta: I don't remember. Zoomed out to 28 or 35 mm. Fuji 200 print film, no computer manipulation except I cropped the rim of the canyon off the top. Route beta: Waterslip Down, 5.10- (plus brownie points for the off-the-ledge exposed start), Paradise Forks, AZ. Climbers unknown.

good one. the colors are amazing, i really like the color of the rock and the green stuff. the strong vertical orientation is realy nice, and is emphasized by the foilage. Yet i think you could also try with a landscape orientation, but you might have seen similar shots a lot, hah. There are some overhanging broken rock around the same level of the talent, which makes him easier to spot. I do not think the color of the shirt is too bad. But i do think this image suffers a lot from compression. I had a hard time noticing his belayer ! The very dark bottom left is a bit distracting, i think this image would be a lot better without this blackhole. Maybe you could brighten that part a bit. Is it an overcast day? Or a north facing cliff not getting much direct light? Otherwise I wonder how it looks like at sunset or sunrise. sidelighting with soft long shadows might work with the verticality of this image well. edited: me not spelink english wel

good shot hillary. i never get these colors or sharpness with print film. the red shirt issue is the only thing i can see improving on. why not slide film? you can't scan them?

In reply to: good shot hillary. i never get these colors or sharpness with print film. the red shirt issue is the only thing i can see improving on. why not slide film? you can't scan them? Not bad, my only real complaint is that its small. This is the type of shot that needs to be blown up a bit. Ok, another complaint. There's just sooooo much rock on the right side and the climbing party is smooshed to the left. I'd like to see the climbers in the left quarter or third, rather than the left fifth. Fifths. That makes me thirsty. UB

In reply to: why not slide film? you can't scan them? I'm just cheap! Since I am a noob, I burn tons of print film while I learn. It's much more cost-effective to do this on film that costs $6 or $7 for a 4-pack. Although, it's funny, I can barely scan the slides I do shoot (hell, sometimes putting things on the flatbed gets the better of me- I'm dense with this techie stuff). That be damned, I am switching to slide more and more these days. The difference in crispness really does amaze me.

Don`t believe hillary, she used Photoshop to manipulate a pic of the side of a chocolate icing mudcake and then chucked a couple of climbers on it. Yeah that`s it, one of those you won`t believe what you are seeing shots. Pity about the shirt eh hill, like ya say, nuthin ya can do bout that eh. really pretty rock walls and definitely worth taking a shot of.

That rock is amazing! When I looked at the shot, my attention was drawn up to the right for some reason. If there was a way to get the climbers into the upper right-hand quadrant of the shot, it would have a better "flow" to it. As an example, here it is flipped horizontally -- and with a slight levels correction to give it a bit more "pop"... (I hope you don't mind) http://www.oceandave.com/flipped_waterslip.jpg Personally, I would have never have known the difference if it were oriented this way. Hey, if you start shooting slides, you can just put it upside down in the scanner!

I don't mind at all, but since I know the crag, looking at it mirrored makes me do this:  My reality has been altered! *twitch twitch*

Here's a shade of blue I thought might be nice. It was really hard working with a small (458X620) image--making an accurate selection a PITA--so it's far from perfect...I can't tell whether that's his arm or the crack trailing off his right side. Anyway, you get the idea... http://www.oceandave.com/waterslip_blue.jpg

It won't sit well with the purists out there but I agree with Philbox and Dave(err...hardman). It's is the perfect situation to do some manipulation in Photoshop. a very sweet pic! The shirt color is indeed the only thing holding it back. Blue is the complement of orange and a logical choice. Photoshop CS has a new tool called the "color replacement tool". It's tailor made for this type of thing.

ooh, I like! :D I'm not that much of a purist. And I'd be less of one if I weren't such a tech-tard.

I really liked your B&W artistic shot of this cliff, but for some reason, I'm not enthused by the color version. Maybe it's the jpeg compression.

In reply to: It's not the same cliff. In that case, comment rescinded. Though, I still like the B&W shot.
