I've been told that the crag is on private land at that the land owner doesn't want anyone climbing. Is this still the current situation?

Thanks,

George.

Where did you hear this and how long ago? Yes it's on private land, but never got wind of a closure. Let me know... I'll investigate on my side...

Tks

I heard this locally from two other ACC members when I asked about Riguad and if I needed to buy a permit from the FQME. Apparently it's been closed for five years.

Hummm... not really. I've been there about 6 times this year alone. And more then 30 times in the last 4 years.

Here's the story:

Mount Rigaud used to be owned by the city. I was sold about 5-6 years ago to private owners. They tolerate climbers at the crag, but do not encourage it. I don't know the name of the owners so I cannot confirm any of this. It was send to me by email this spring from one of the routes opener.

Finally, you do not need to be part of the FQME to climb there.

Hope this clarifies the issue a bit...

As far as I know all the information stated by e-wire is correct. There has been no issue with access this year or recent years past.

Its a fun place, enjoy the climbing.

I'll be heading out there sometime soon then. Thanks guys.

By banning climbing does the land owner avoid the personal liability imposed on him by Quebec law?

George.

Good question... I guess so, we all become "trespassers" to the eyes of the law. But I think it can be debatable in court. Just don't fall and sue anyone!

I used to climb there 10+ years ago. Here's what I remember - note that most of it came from word of mouth, i.e. not from "official" sources.
- The cliff is located in a ski resort
- In summer, the owner of the ski resort used to put a big log in the entry of the flat grassy area used as a parking lot in winter, but no sign
- The first climber to come in in the morning would typically push the log aside, and park his/her car in the winter parking lot
- It seems that this pissed the owner off
- I also heard about a suicide committed on the climbing cliff (?)
- SUVs would go up and down the ski slopes, damaging them
- Locals (?) would go to the top of the cliffs, drink beer then listen to the funny noise they make when crashing at the bottom of cliff
- Eventually, for some or all of these reason, I heard that the owner banned climbing there.
Great climbing, though, and a couple of nice hikes in the area too if the weather isn't perfect.
