Building barn wall (Update)

Just wondering if anyone has built a wall on the inside of a barn. I am in the process of building a wall in one of our un-used cow barn walls. This barn is over 50 ft tall and is curved to around a 60 degere angle at the top. I am starting in the hay loft where the barn starts angling toward you approx. 15 ft off ground level. If anyone has any advice I was appreciate it.

Update: Pic #1 This is the pic of the wall that I started on. I am not sure what that structure in the center was used for but I wont be using it, It is about 20 ft tall though. Has anyone put plywood up on a wall that is continually curivng toward you? how did you bend the plywood to attach it?
I am not sure how I am going to do this as the wall gets taller. any suggestions would be appreciated.

there are lots of threads about building your own wall. Do a search on this site for them. When you start building we would love to see some pics if you could. Good Luck!

i am building a wall on the back of my garage/barn thing (smaller than a big barn but much bigger than a garage) You probibaly already built yours but just in case you should know that building a frame and putting heavy-duty plywood onto it makes it A LOT easier when you put the holds on. that way you can remove the holds easily and change the route once it no longer is challenging!

sounds like you have a great substrate! I'm using a detatched two story garage with the emphisis on economy and ease of modification. Basically using 2x8 planks of various lengths up to 10' and running them vertically along the inside walls and roof to the top of the A-Frame. I'm anchoring them with 3/8" carraige bolts that also vary in length up to 12 inches. The purpose of the long carriage bolts is to allow you to adjust the pitch of each plank. The result is a more realistic and modifiable contour of the climbing plane. Finding cheap 2x8 planks is the crux.

If im not mistaken, wetting it is the way to go. Ask your local skate rats how they built their half-pipe or do a search on the net for building skate ramps.

I've built lots of skate ramps and we never wet the wood. 4x8 pieces of ply bend pretty well. we always glue it on the frame and then nail it on. get some strong friends to help hold it in place though.

The walls of your barn will never hold the weight of a fall......... You better have good support. 8^)

Why do you say that? Personally I think the walls have and will continue to withstand greater stress than a fall. Why would the walls of MY barn be any different than any other indoor wall?

~Drool~
Dude... Your possibiles are endless... Do you know how to weld? Learn
Ever built a skateboard ramp... Look into those construction technquies...
A 15Ft high by 30-40ft long bouldering wall is all you would ever need.

Espcially if you add the right features. I have a pic of my wall posted on this site, check it out
the pic is a litte out of date... I have more holds and few more finishing touches.

feel free to PM me if you want more details

The walls of your barn are no different than any other barn. From the pic it would look like you have 2x8's or so on 24 inch centers. This would be ok if you were not dealing with a span somewhere in the 75 foot plus span range. The Barn gets most of it's strenth from the steel exterior. It is designed to function as a whole, there is really no thought into a point load like a fall would exert on an anchor. Looks like a fun project.

don't ignore the posts about strength.

the walls i see in your picture are designed for static loads and for limited live loads on the exterior (rain, snow, wind, etc.). the interior is probably not designed or engineered to handle the weight of your wall or the live load of a climber, or fall.

as i'm sure was the case with the other posters, i'm not trying to ruffle any feathers - just don't want to see you get hurt.

i would also suggest building another structure in front of the existing wall, or getting a structural engineer involved and somehow retrofitting the existing framing to be strong enough for what you want to do.

Maybe to get the wood up there you can aid your way up with roofing spikes in the beams instead of pro (to attach the draw to the spikes use a runner that is less than or eqaul to 12" with a slip know in one end for the spike and a 'biner in the other.) When you get to the top you can build the anchor that you are going to use for the finished climb. Then you can hang, haul, and rappell to where you need to be. I may just be over complicating things though.

The simple way would be to borrow a loooooooooooong ladder from a buddy that is in construction.
