just wondering how many climbers out there are also into other extreme sports. Skydiving, cliff jumping, kayaking, etc...... or do you just give it all to the rock?

Nope, I gave up the dangerous stuff like soccer after destroying my knee last year. 4 months off from climbing after surgery was too much. I'm sticking to the safer stuff from now on.

I gave up sponsorship for half-ironman distance tiathlons, and Xc mt-biking...all for climbing. Every dollar goes into gear, and my car to get me there.

Sometimes I eat those pretzels that the guys sell off the side of the road. That's pretty extreme, right? Or is that hardcore?

Great, now I'm confusing myself....

I don't know about "extreme sports" but I do seem to have more life threatening or possibly debilitating hobbies than my friends. I ride a motorcycle (constantly, only take the car if I'm driving someone else), I climb 3 times a week, and I play hockey (when not on motorcycle or climbing). I do a lot of running too, but I don't think that counts.

I used to fight "no holds barred" which is far more controlled and safe than most people think, but still considered extreme. I also used to mountain bike alot. Now I just climb as often as I can.

Taking LSD, now THAT was an extreme sport! I've been caving since 1992, I guess you can call that an extreme sport.

So I tried skydiving once...if I had money, and I didn't need more gear, I'd jump out of airplanes every weekend. It's the coolest thing I've ever done in my life, all climbing included. You all should try it.

Scuba diving? It never seemed extreme until that shark swam by...

It's very different from climbing, but it's the only hobby that I didn't give up when I took up climbing.

Also like climbing, diving involves spending way more time BS'ing about doing it than actually doing it. It has the same opportunities for camaraderie (i.e. drinking beer while BS'ing).

ya'll are clueless. The sooner you realize that xlimbing is not an extreme (whatever the fukk extreme means) sport, the sooner you can progress in your own climbing.

"Climbing is not and never will be an 'x-treme' sport. It's too calculated, too natural, with no gratuitous stunts, not enough blood, and altogether too much class." --Jeff Achey, from Climbing 230.

SCUBA is extreme, depending on how you do it. Spending time 150 feet under water takes knowledge and complete faith in your equipment... just like rock climbing.

This may sound strange, but I found skydiving to be a bit boring. You jump, you fall. A rock could do it.... except for the jumping part.

The whole 'extreme' thing came out of extreme skiing, which in Europe meant 'you fall you die' i.e. very steep chutes etc. In the US the extreme skiing video series by Eric Perlman poplarized American style extreme skiing, i.e. jumping off cliffs.

Then it went everywhere.

At the first extreme games I saw a banner on an alley for extreme bowling! They were interviewing athletes asking "what does extreme mean to you?" and everyone was like "it means an overused lame marketing word". The next year they switched it to the X-Games.

I'm into too many damn sports:

skiing powder/steeps (fatties) or halfpipe/bumps (twin tips)
wakeboarding
skydive
bungee
trampoline
slackline
raft/kayak
scuba
jet skiing (in the waves preferably, only standup)
snowboarding/telemark
mtn bike
surfing
wind surfing
ice/alpine/mountaineering/backcountry skiing

my wife made me promise not to BASE jump though
