Basic equipment The Bare minimum: The use of a harness. Climbing shoes that fit make life easier. Tennies will do in a pinch. Chalkbag and chalk, a belay device and locking biner. Many times all of it can be borrowed at first, but if you want to be self sufficient, this is what you need.

What is an Onsight? To climb a route with or without preplaced draws, and without any prior knowledge of the route. No beta. No having tried it before. No having watched someone climb the route.

What is a redpoint? The current definition is to climb from the bottom to the top without weighting the rope or the bolts. It used to mean placing the draws as you climbed, and the current version was called a pinkpoint.

What do you need a second rope for? There are various possible reasons. The most likely reason is that the route requires full rope length rappels. (two ropes) Other possible reasons are: climbing in a party of three, use as an anchor and/or extension.

Which is the best way to orient the biners on a draw? The latest word say’s that the gate on both carabiners should face the same way.

Which way should the biners face when you are clipping a bolt? Bolt side of draw, open or tight? Loose end on the bolt (in case it needs to be said again). Rope end facing away from direction of travel. Bolt end. Different theories. Probably more important to face the bolt end away from the bolt but some people use the direction of travel theory. Chris Harmston of BD said once he'd worry about interaction with the rock (any kind of bump that could push the gate open) more than either of the other two factors. dalguard

What is Z clipping??? Z-clipping is when you have a draw at your waist and are clipping above your head and accidentally grab the rope that is below the bottom draw instead of above it. When you clip it the rope goes from the ground to the top draw, down to the bottom draw and then to you so when you climb up the rope makes a Z. This is bad, don't do it. paulc

How long until you started lead climbing??? No, you don't want to toprope forever, unless that's your thing. The longer you TR, the more addicted to the security of the toprope you're likely to become. Better to start leading sooner than later. Just stick to easy leads at first and increase difficulty gradually. jt512
