5'5" at 170 lbs. I've been climbing for about two years now at age 40ish. I clicked off
a .10b and almost made a .5.10d (one tough move away at the top) at Rumney.

However, I am envious of the tall & lean crowd, even though that wouldn't be ideal for
my other passion! Hockey!

My fingers usually ache long before the muscle tires! I may have to go on the Oprah
diet to shed another 10lbs or so.

It's all about having fun anyways, so you make do with what you've got!

6'3" about 220lbs. Makes it tough for climbing and I have to keep my arms/fingers/tendons really strong to do hard or sustained climbing.

Other than that... I'm a sexy b*tch. 8^)

Damn, you guys are all so light... Im 6'4" with a 6'2.5" armspan.. does that make me a -1.5 ape or a 1.5 ape? Im about 210 pounds, fairly lean (getting a six pack from swiss ball workouts, the chicks love it, hehe) I have a huge back and legs and relativley small arms and chest/front and short fingers, so Im good at some aspects of climbing like bridging, jaming and "grit for thugs" but am poop on crimps and overhangs.

On another note; Does anyone else find that if they climb a lot and dont go to the gym for a while their posture really starts to suffer? I find that my back and shoulders gets so big it skews my stance and I end up with a bad back.. (hence all the time on the swiss ball trying to eaven up a bit) Anyone have any tips hwat exercises can sort out bad-climber-posture?

I'm 5' 10" and about 140. I am a swimmer so my body is built well for climbing (strong back, forarms, and legs) My flexability is my biggest crutch and i wish my legs were a bit longer.

currently 225lbs 6' 1" . Getting back into climbing I was out 2 seasons with illness and traveling etc.

My fighting weight is ~185lbs. I've done 5.12's at these weights every pound less is a huge relief. I can only climb like a 5.9 when I'm at 200lbs +.

2 years ago I was running and training for a triathlon, I was the lightest I've been in years. ~175lbs my high school weight. I went to the climbing gym found I could onsite all the 5.12 they had to throw at me. between weighting 15lbs lighter and having awesome cardio strength I was smooth and strong and never out of breath. Huge difference weight can make. you guys that weigh 150lbs etc. add 15-20lbs to your body and try to do that route your hanging off of with one arm and explaining to friend how to do it. ahhaaha

I'm a lightweight.

5'11"
131lbs
Ape Index is around -3 or -4"

My senior year in HS I was 5'11" and wrestled the 112lb weight class...wasn't too great, but someone had to do it. So I'm pretty much the least built person I know.

i'm 6'0" and 165-170lbs.
I'm definitely more of the tall/skinny/lanky body type, and don't have a lot of muscle mass, so I think I do better on long, reachy routes.
Endurance seems to be good, so I do pretty well on those too.
I seem to suffer on powerful moves or slopers though.

As for the height, every time I try a move or problem that seems "too crunched up" - I used to just kind of blame it on height, but I think it has to do a lot more with my lack of flexibility.
I don't think height would ever be a disadvantage if I had better flexibility

ok this is probally a dumb question since probally everyone in the world knows this but me, but what is this ape index everyones talking about?

Try this:
Stretch your arms out as wide as you can, have someone measure the distance from fingertip to fingertip. If this distance is for example 3 inches longer than your height you have a +3 ape index.

I don't think so ... I've wondered what the ape index was for a long time, but was too embarased to ask :oops: in fear of sounding stupid. I should of remembered that the only stupid question is the one not asked!

ape index, +7"
Yes, ape index plus seven inches.

I have short legs because I was born early- I have no right foot and no fibulas (the smaller bone in the lower leg, below the knee. My tibias are fine, the larger legbones.)
My prosthetic right leg, which starts below the knee and wraps around my leg for support, only truly replacing my right foot with a slightly flexible carbon fiber foot.
I think my legs are short and my arms are long because, had I developed legs normally, I would be taller.
However, the only problem any of this has in climbing is the fact that I can't feel with my right foot. I have to depend on estimation of body position, how bent my knee is, and the rubber of the shoe to keep my right foot on the wall.
Sometimes, my foot will just slip off, and this means that in general, I rely a lot more heavily on my arm strength, and when I have the option and position to, often switch my left foot to a right foot hold for stability.
I currently climb 5.10+.
You would think having one leg would be a disadvantage in a lot of things, but not really. I swim, hike, run, etc. I have gone on long backpacking trips. The longest hike I've done was 22 miles in a day. The fastest I've run a mile was 7:25.

My husband and I are about the smallest people we know (and we're average height). I'm 5'4, 116 pounds and he's 5'9 and 135 lbs. We both lift weights, boulder , hike and I trail run a couple of days a week. We both have been accused of being "skinny" but under the clothes it's all muscle. Maybe athletic is a better word. Our body types are totally different though and so are our climbing styles. He's all arms and upper body, tearing his way through the problems. My strength is fairly proportionate all over so I usually take my time (also, I hate falling!)

We really only climb together and our spots are pretty remote so I can't really judge the difference in body types. For some reason, I always imagine that tall people would have it easier. Are my insecurities showing? Can you tall people tell me whether I'm imaging this?

anyway, im 177cm tall and have about 70-73kg.
how could you loose something as important as a six pack. mines in the fridge.

at 6ft 2 ands over 200 lbs, (14 1/2 stone) but i do play rugby as well, so i have the strength, its just hauling my more than ample frame over roofs that i have problems with. have led E4 on slabs and the vertical.

I'm 6' 2" tall and weigh about 180. I keep in the best physical condition I can, sometimes running or biking. I also try to workout every night doing whatever I can to stimulate muscles. It helps me when Im on the wall so I can worry less about pulling myself up and more about using the holds correctly.

6'1"..use to be 195 of muscle/fat when i was a gym monkey (pushing weights and metal), afew sleep/eat disorders later i'm down to 165-170 (lifting metal withdrawls and working night shifts)...

so i basicly have no fat on me, i wouldn't say that i have 'long' arms or legs....i think my arms and legs are in proportion to my height...

i'm not going to say that my height has given my an advantage....some climbs (trad) i climb 'em in a second/....other sports or slabs i takes me longer (usually when seconding cus my partner is like 5'4 and the sequences for him and me are TOTTALY different...so like every time is a onsight sometimes...)

I'm 5' 6" and 115 pounds i guess you would say on the thin side, i'm best at static moves i don't have a whole lot of power but i have alot of lock-off strengh

I'm 5' 7'', 118 lbs, around a +3 ape index (havent checked lately)....that seems to help...I'm not terribly good at bouldering (v4ish), but my endurance is pretty good.

i am 5'11 about 145 pounds and asian. ive been consistently climbing for just over a year now (no less than 3 days a week) indoors and outdoors. i find that bc of my slenderness i am more flexible in highstepping and my height gives me reach advantage. i can do overhangs with ease although i burn out sooner than i would like to. i dont think i have much limitations because of my body type except for the fact that i dont train as much as i should (abs and slopers). but i still got guns! my strengths are dynos and crimps.

Right now I'm in the 5' 8" 135 lb area and getting ready to drop 5 lbs of water for wrestling. I am pretty well built (i can do one arm pull ups, front levers, ect.) and have pretty good grip and tendon stregnth (my hand doctor said I have a 150 lb grip). I guess this is all good for climbing but I find I have a little unneeded bulk in my legs from all the mountain biking I do. I find myself most comfortable on boulder problems with my build.

Uh yeah, I'm pretty bottom heavy. Mesomorphic with 24 inch thighs and a 30 inch waist. (too many team sports) Short arms for somebody who's 5'9". 163 lbs. I have to do a little more deadpointing and dyno than most. My training focus is on form, finger strength and endurance. :wink:

I am 5'4", between 115 and 120lbs. More of an athletic frame, you can tell I do some sports, but not muscular until you watch me climb, then you can see my muscles flex. I was in gymnastics for awhile which helped me build strength, then after climbing I have good finger strength (although I still can't hold on to slopers) and okay endurance. Power is something I still need to work on. And not sure what my ape index is, I'll have to check that out.

I think I have everybody beat in girth. I'm 6'4" tall and easily 300 lbs. IT SUCKED FINDING A HARNESS. Shoes were a pain also because I wear a size 15 normal shoe. That doesn't stop me though. I am at the climbing gym almost every day because I am attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and they have a gym a block away that is free for students. It's heaven. :lol:
