Ok, so I'm really new to this whole climbing thing, and as I was reading around the site, I noticed ALOT of technical words that went way over my head :D ! First off, what's bouldering?
Anyway, hi everyone, I'm Emily, and as I said, I'm really new to climbing...so new, I can't say I've ever really rock climbed before! Unless the local gravel pit counts...
I really want to get into climbing, but I'm not sure how to start! I know our local YMCA has a wall, but I'd also like to climb outdoors. Any suggestions as to how I go about starting up (haha, literally)? Thanks!

Welcome to the jungle.

Bouldering is climbing short routes (often on boulders) without a rope or protection. Often, people use a crash pad and spotters to make the landing friendlier if they fall.

Climb on.

Nugirl,

A very good way to start climbing is to do a course. Ask around in local clubs.

Indoor gyms are a good way to begin, but the outdoors are totally different from indoors.

Start with having experienced people around to show you the ropes (literally)

Good luck and welcome. Beware climbing is a dangerous addiction!

Welcome nugirl!

If you wanna get familliar with special terms, these links might help you:

Climbing dictionary
Climbing faq

For further info you also can check alpenclimbers

FAQ Traditional Climbing and
work in progress The FAQ

Lot of good info to get there.
Just don't forget that reading (especially on internet) will never be a substitute for an experienced guide who shows you things in real live.

Have fun!

- Daniel

* Quick note to anyone who might change it: Finding the Climbing dic is a pain. Couldn't there be a quicklink or such to make it available from the main page or at least a sticky in the beginners forum? *

Thanks so much for the advice! I never would have guessed that I've actually been bouldering several times, and didn't even know it! I'm looking forward to my new found "addiction" :D

READ! Lots of good books out there. I checked these out from the library and it helped alot.

Freedom of the hills

John Long's "anchors'

The trailside guide to rock climbing.

Ask other climbers questions and bounce their replies against your own experience and what youve read.

DONT FORGET : rappelling is just as important as everything else, dont be one of those who dies just at the end of long day.

find the other climbers in your area. start chillin with them when they go climbing. (indoors or outdoors, just climb)you'll love it and they'll like having a lady around. just don't go jumping into any stupid relationships, 'cause if it gets sour, you might not want to climb with them anymore.

That's what I'd like to do, meet other climbers, but I don't know how to do that! None of my friends climb...that's the problem...I don't know how to meet people who climb :?

Thanks for all the great answers!

Hey, too bad you don't live anywhere near Chicago. I'd love to help you get started climbing. You just changed your life for the better by getting into it.

I'd like to point out that if some random dude asked that question he would've been flamed to no end. Since it's a girl, there's no links to the RC.com search engine.
