I`d recommend one that's after 81. The older, aircooled venagons are drunkards... They'll need around 13 liters per hundred kilometers (does anyone can translate this to gallons per 100 miles?). The later, watercooled get away under 10. The only exception I'd make is if you manage to find a real old one with that panorama windows on top. They are way too cool to care about gas and motor power  - Daniel

I think I know of someone in the Philly area. If you think it's worth the trip (cause I doubt he'll deliver) I'll check into it.

I love mine, but glad that it is one of the newer ones (90). They are only 4 cylinder and chug up any hill. Having a water cooled engine is much better than an air cooled engine like the older ones you are considering. They tend to over heat very easily.

I think 1980 was the first year for the watercooled. Not that water cooled are that much better because air cooled were made to be cooled by air as were Porsches. But with the watercooled you have newer technology and bodystyles. It just depends on what you are into. Check out the classifieds at http://www.hotdub.com/forums/

You don't want a westy. I have had several. Older models are cheap to work on but break down all the time. The newer one break down all the time and are expensive. Go with a Sportsmobile. The founder of Sportmobile was the orignal designer of the VW campers. You can get a ford or dodge van with the same lay-out as a westy but more dependable and cheaper to fix. check out Sportsmobile.com

I have to agree, I just got my new Sportsmobile and it is unbeatable. Check out the web page and look at some of the used ones to keep the price lower (still higher than a VW, though).

I've got a 75' Westy and love it. That being said, they *are* pretty tempermental, under powered, and rather uncomfortable on long road trips (at least with the stock seats). But there's just something about them that I love (guess it's because I grew up riding in old VW's).

i absolutely love my westy! sportsmobiles are super nice but rather pricey! Check out autotrader.com, gowesty.com are a few places to start looking. Nothing like the lifestyle the van affords. You get what you pay for so make sure to find one that has been pampered.

"vtrouble-u" I have to agree, I had an 84 vanagon, and although great for road trips iys hard on the wallet, if you stick with it, consistent tlc is neccesary.

If you like being under a car more than in one, it's the car for you! There are lots of other alternatives.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't had that many problems with mine. Keep in mind though that it's not my everyday car and usually only gets used for road trips

You should try and find a 23-window one. They are the best ever. And yes, they really do have 23 windows. hehehe. If you go to a bug fest, you could find one. They have all kinds of shows around the states. Been to quite a few myself and I have seen some really great ones. Good luck!
