climbing and yoga?

when i do look up something to do with climbing whether it be online or stoppin in at the local climbing gym i always see something that has to do with yoga.... i was told that yoga is a series of streched to get you into a certain mind set for meditation, and i was wondering why is it that yoga and climbing always gets paired together i mean my friends and peers tend to think i do yoga when i tell them i climb. i mean why is that ?

on a different note i wouldn't mind getting into yoga because i deeply enjoy meditation and the feeling associated with it. ( thats why i climb because of the feeling i get from it kinda like yoga i guess) but i just happen to be well not very flexible so any suggestions from you yoga junkies out there.

i do enjoy wearing the baggy yoga lounging pants.. quite comfy along with my fuzzy slippers

I think you sortof answered your own question.

Rock climbing is a lot like yoga both mentally and physically.
Climbing and yoga both require focus, strength, and balance.
Climbers are also usually pretty in touch with nature, and yoga reinforces that value.

You should get flexible, cause that helps quite a bit with climbing.

Moral of the story is that you should do yoga.

My wife encouraged me to take up yoga years ago. She finally hooked me when she said, "It could help your climbing..." I practiced for a couple years off and on. While I don't currently practice, I found it beneficial.

Yoga required more strength than I originally thought it would. It also requires some stamina and discipline to sustain certain poses. While in some very uncomfortable positions, I had to focus on controlled breathing, relaxation, etc. When you combine that with the increased flexibility and balance, it's little wonder that climbers might enjoy it.

Another aspect of yoga that translates into climbing is pushing personal boundaries. After practicing both for a while, it's interesting to look back and see your progress. Things that seem impossible slowly become routine.

i've been wanting to try some yoga. i've been climbing a couple of years now and i definitely see how the extra flexibility and body and mind control can improve my climbing, but unfortunately, i live 1.5 hours away from my "local" climbing gym, so yoga is usually out of the question. :(

Yoga definately helps. I wonder why so many people think that climbers are in touch with nature. I guess they haven't seen some of the sport crags I've been too, or how some climber threat their local cliffs.

I have been doing kung fu for 2 or 3 years now and i dont even need to climb often to stay where i am at when i last stopped if that makes any sense :) it really helps to be flexible and yoga dosent just makes you flex it can make you work pretty hard if you do it right. also brings your inners to life.

i recently started doing Bikram Yoga...a series of yoga moves in 100+ degree heat. the moves never change from class to class...you just get better at them....its sort of like a mantra, it becomes your "safe place" when you go do the class. the heat is the factor that makes you really focus and get mentally tough. i love it...youll never sweat this much....and youll make mental and physical gains like you would never believe.

give it a go:

I've been practicing Ashtanga (Yoga for athletes) for 3 years. It took me 2 years to touch my toes. I have long legs, OK. I was only going 1x per week. To get max benefits you should go at least 2 but 3 days a week is best.

Wurd on the bikram yoga. I just started - after just 3 sessions I can touch my toes - might not be a big deal for most - but for an ex-long distance runner its a huge deal. I can see the HUGE benefit yoga will have on climbing. I see yoga as having 3 main benefits that will carry over to your climbing:

Balance: Yoga teaches balance - while your body is in awkard positions - benefit to climbing is obvious.

Flexibility: Being able to step up to high footholds - huge benefit.

Breathing: Yoga teaches you how to keep breathing while your body is in uncomfortable, strenuous positions - think of what you do when you enter the crux of a climb at your limit (you usually stop breathing).

Steph Davis is a huge proponent of yoga - she cites this as her main training tool for freeing Freerider in Yos.

My advise to you:

Worry about yoga later and start to concentrate on punctuation. Start with the period. After that, try to learn about the comma, capitalization, and proper uses of clauses.

Seriously, it's not like it saves you time to leave out punctuation. It doesn't have to be perfect, but you can at least make an effort to form coherent sentences.

Or you might want to give Anasura yoga a try. It's physically challenging, but not as intensive as hatha or power yoga. I look to yoga for recuperation from all my other physical activities rather than as yet another workout. Anasura focuses on breathing and opening up the chest, which can help with the hunched backs that climbers can get. The downside is it's not as popular as the other types of yoga, so you might have some difficulty finding a class.

You can also think of time invested as a sliding scale. The more time you spend to make your posts legible, the less time people need to spend figuring out what you're trying to say. I know if I have too much trouble sorting out a post, I'll often skip it. By saving a minute, you may cut down the number of people willing to read your post. If that's the case, why bother posting?

If you feel it's worth the effort to type something, do your best to communicate clearly. The same goes for spelling. While this may not be your professional resume, how you present yourself will still impact how you're received. For the love of god, please don't confuse unintelligible with cool.

I don't know very much about yoga but i do want to try it. I just started pilates, it works on your core strength and somewhat on flexability. I can do a pretty good ammount of situps but less than halfway through the 20 minute dvd i had to stop, my muslces were to worked already and i know that some climbers do that as well.

I think everyone missed the mark on this one. The reason yoga and climbing have been inextricably linked together can be explained in one word... PRANA. They sponser Sharma, ergo the climbing link, but they also market the majority of their clothing to the yoga practitioner. Seriously though, Prana gear rocks (except for the $$$ pricetag), and I've been practicing Bikram yoga for a couple of years.

Maybe yoga would help your climbing; I don't know. The proper question, though, is whether yoga will help your climbing more than any other activity you could be engaging in at that time. I find it hard to believe that it would be more beneficial training than something more sport-specific.

If you think yoga is fun, good for you. But why need to rationalize it and act like it's some sort of climbing-specific training?
