Ok here is the skinny I really like my Trango Captain hooks, the old purple pink ones. I think they throw the best and are weighted properly....so what is the life span of the shafts? There is no visible blemishes and the history is spotless no drops or torquey twists...
So in terms of safety, is there a life sapn...or is it the good ol 5 years and you gotta change it out....(Not sure I would buy that with tools)
Thanks
for the thoughts.

In my humble opinion I would have to say that there are 3 reasons why I would retire a tool.

1. If the head is loose
2. If the shaft or head of the tool have visible cracks in them.
3. if I have doubts as to the integrity of the tool.

I'm sure this list could go on for ever, but that is what I look for when inspecting my tools. I hope this helps.

I would venture to guess that they're ok if they're used for "just" ice climbing.

Now if you were to use them as part of an anchor or belay, you might think about retiring them.

I dunno, just talking out my ass....
