I know this topic has been rehashed hundreds of times but now I need hard data for why everyone rock climbs. My brother wants to do a persuasive argument for his public speaking class that rock climbing is not a sport of just adrenaline junkies (because his public speaking teacher always jokes with him about it). So I set up a poll so that he can say "according to users of rockclimbing.com, 34% say"... blah, blah, blah. Feel free to leave comments if I left any reasons out but I really need the numbers. The poll doesn't need any registration or stupid things like that. Thanks. Vote here

Nope, can't help you. I looked at your poll and 3 of the answers apply. Rob

I can't give you a single answer either. For me my motivation lies in some combination of answers B, D, and E. You definitely do not need to be an "adrenaline junkie" to be a climber. In fact, the longer I climb, the smoother and more methodical my climbing becomes. Earlier in my climbing career the fear factor was far greater. As I learned to deal with the fear that climbing creates I was able to focus more on the moves ahead of me. Being less scared also allowed me to gain an even greater appreciation of the amazing settings where my climbing was taking place (it's hard to notice beauty when you are shaking in your shoes). I don't know this for sure, but I imagine my body produces less epinephrine during climbing than when I was a beginner. It's nice not to be scared to death all the time.

Yeah, I know you'll fit into a bunch of categories. The thing I'm really looking for is that I think few people will actually pick the adrenaline choice. That way my brother can say "Of the x amount of people at RC.com, only 4.5% chose the adrenaline." If I get a lot of people to vote, I'll have a followup question that asks if you would still climb if there was more danger involved.

Haha. why do people climb? damn, that must be one heck of a poll. To capture the essence of climbing for each person in a few options? Nice. For me? Im always looking to push myself personally. Team sports (still playing soccer and have been for 16 years) always frustrated me because a win or a loss isnt always in your hands, no matter how hard you work. Rock climbing is all about you; how far you can push it, how bad you want it. And hey, rock never moves. Its always there. Probably my favorite excuse to get out of the city and into the wild and clear the mind...yeah, it about all that and more.

have to agree. that token list of "other reasons" needs major re-working. as is, sounds like you're out to only disprove adrenaline rush as the main motivation, but don't really care what truly motivates climbers to climb. not much of a persuasive argument if you can only show what isn't but not what is if i were the instructor, as of now, i'd give your brother a C, or maybe a B- if i happen to be in a really good mood, like right after i've just had the coed who's been letting me do her to get herself a better grade

None of the options really applied to me. I'm nowhere near an adrenaline junkie, but do love the rush of it, but like the tactile aspect of it, want to be strong and move well, makes me feel more confident and capable and coordinated, it's a great way to get rid of old/invalid fears, and it's fun!

Many reasons really, but here are a few: 1) Surfing crowds are growing and the lineup is becoming more tense and hostile. The last thing I need in my free time is tension. 2) I have destinations to travel to that don't involve the ocean. 3) I enjoy the challenge of remaining calm and focused while pushing my body and mind to the max. 4) It's a great way to exercise (especially with a long approach). 5) I love being outdoors in beautiful places.

I climb for the love of the climb and challenge. I love to challenge myself and this is a great way to push myself while enjoying the exercise and the outdoors. It is just a feeling you get when you have reached that goal on the rock you have challenged yourself to do. No one can tell you that you can not do it or are incapable of doing it. No one is there to challenge yourself better than you can.

So for those of you who simply said that none of the answers apply, please give me an answer that you would vote for and I'll add it.

Climbing quickly refocuses my life. When I am up on the rock, I can’t worry about work, school, or anything else not related to the task at hand. It is just plain remarkable. Eric

Why did it take so long To figure it out Like I'm the only one Who didn't get it I did it all for the nookie The nookie So you can take that cookie And stick it up your ass Stick it up your ass! You put all that on your survey and I'll vote for it. DMT

I love the way a harness makes my package look. I generally don’t climb much; I just do lots of "warm up" lunges at the base of the crag.

I climb because of the lamost Zen like feeling that comes over me as I am going up. None of the problems that plague a person during the normal run of the day like, what am I doing with my life, do I have enough money for my car payment, how can I get that cute chick at work to talk to me...yadda, yadda, yadda, none of it seems to penetrate into my mind when I'm climbing. THere are better ways to get fit than climbing I'm sure, but I love the workout that I get when I doing it. I enjoy the rush of completing a hard climb, not I'm not an adrenaline junkie, I don't think anyway(who wants to go skydiving tomorrow?)
In reply to: And cuz the chicks dig it. Rob and of course there's always that
