Has anyone ever been canyoneering in zion? What was it like? Do you recommend a guide or take your own gear?

We just hiked it, stay away from the rainy season, flash flooding from july-sep, I think.
May is the best time to go, its warm enough, but not hot.
Oh, and the stream is really really cold!!
I'm sure the more experienced will tell you more.

Good beta on many Zion canyons is available HERE
Also, you can join a mailing list HERE for partners, spew, and up-to-date beta (canyons can change significantly with a flood).

I am only going to be there 5 days and I am making a must do list. What are your suggestions?
For hiking I am thinking about angels landing and the narrows.
What is the best canyon if you could only do one?

Yes. Deep and cold, sweltering and hot. Mostly red.
Hiring a guide to hike a slot canyon is about the lamest endeavor I could possibly imagine.
There are numerous how to books. To summarize... good reliable foot wear that won't break down in water. Don't wear thuse cute littke kyack slippers, they will cripple you in a few miles.
You need a waterproof pack or be prepared to fuck with plastic bags till you are tempted to suffocate yourself with them. Sierra Trading Post almost always has a good deal on 2nd's water proof packs.
You need a hiking stick or a ski pole or something.
Climbing gear is route specific, many don't require any at all.
Everything else is just hiking.

I've seen video footage of flash flood from the canyons of Zion. Thousands of little watterfalls comeing down the stone, beutiful but extremely dangerous. Actually watching a flash flood from the safety of a dry ledge in Zion is number 17 on my "Before I die List", for you guys that remember that thread...

If you know your anchors... no need for a guide. There are several places for beta on the various canyons. The place is great for it.
