Silly question for the day: what is your favorite type of rock to climb on and why? Limestone, granite, etc... Me? I like sandstone. It has a tendency to be soft, but at least the sandstone I have climbed on has also been pretty dry and grippy and finger-friendly. So that's why I love sandstone best You?

You gotta be kidding! I was thinking when I read your headline that my reply would be "anything but sandstone". I climbed on some in England & the site (at an adventure camp that was friendly to drop-in day climbers) and they had a rule "no rappelling, no gear placement" because the rock was so soft that the ropes had made huge cuts in the rock and gear placement would just break off pieces of the rock. I also climbed on limestone in Belgium that had become slippery like glass from years of climbing and probably from the weather as well. Those were really interesting experiences & taught me that you just gotta' adapt to whatever is available nearby. So, of course, I'm partial to the beautiful granite that makes up my favorite place in the world: Devil's Tower!

For sport climbing, I would say Limestone is probably the best thing going. Pockets, blocks, pinches, crimpers, tendency to be overhanging, etc...all pluses for sport climbing. Now for trad climbing, I would have to say....granite. Nothing feels as bomber as a good stopper placement in a perfect constriction in granite. Feels like you could have a VW in your back pocket, fall, and the gear would still hold

Granite, no doubt about it! I like climbing long crack lines (and I haven't made it to Indian Creek or Six Shooter yet, and am thus ignorant of the truly great sandstone areas) and the best ones I've jumped on have all been granite. Plus, Tuolumne and the Needles are made of granite, so it must be the Rock of the Gods [ This Message was edited by: jabbeaux on 2002-06-11 05:22 ]

Granite's where it's at. New Hampshire is "The Granite State"... that's what most of the rock around here is. The majority of my outdoor climbing has been on granite.

Limestone. Nothing gives me more of a kick in the pants than climbing on that. Some of the wildest moves I've done are on Limestone. Granite is next (and Devils Tower rock). Solid gear placements, and always interesting face or crack climbing.

Round' these parts we have granite in the mountains, and that's probably my favorite. But around town it's mostly columnar basalt (lava rock) which is awesome for gear placements and gives you alot of great cracks to climb. Soaks up heat like a mother though, really hot in the summer.

Mostly I like the granite, but i had climbed on very nice limestone in Russia, and it was so good... at least at the sport routes. On trad routes though, with all the grass and loose rocks... I vote for granite!

oh yea it's gotta be limestone or granite as long as the limestone is onerhanging or roof and the granite is pure vertical (or slab with the crystal cheesegrater like was said above) Wishing I was on some now Mike

Well, I wish that I could say granite just to be like everyone else, but I have never climbed on it. Dolomite though, is the best rock I have ever climbed on. You have massive pockets, its super hard for good trad placements, its overhanging (but you can find a few good slab climbs). Its just great. (In case you are wondering where this is, check out The Sinks near Lander Wyoming)

Wow! so tuff to decide. I like so many different areas. It just depends on where I am at. Because every area has its own charatoristics. These are some that I think are the best. Like Yosemite- Granite, Indian Creek- sanstone, Red rocks- sandstone, Paridise Forks- Basalt, Queen Creek- Rhyolite, man I could go on forever!

I love the intracacies of Granite. Since I have little power, granite seems to focus more on balance, technique, etc.
