I'm an 18 year old girl going to New Zealand by herself. I'm looking to climb, back pack, generally explore the country. Any tips about being a solo female climber over there?

Hello, I just read your post about your intended trip to New Zealand. It may interest you to know that a friend of mine is intending on being there in early February with the intention on climbing. His name is Josh (his handle is temporary-wintertime) and I climbed with him while I was in Australia last year at this time. He’s a nice guy and I’m sure If you contact him he’d be willing to meet up with you to do some climbing. Like you he’s also 18.
Also, it may interest you to know that I’ve been to New Zealand twice. Lovely country. If you’d like to throw any questions my way about your intended trip I’d be glad to try to answer them. Keep in mind that while I was there I wasn’t there to rock climb. But I did more backpacking and all around dirt bagging then I’d care to admit to.

Have fun, take lots of pictures.

I think there is a climbing club or organization for women in New Zealand, sort of similar to Sheclimbs in the US. With a little digging you might find them and make some contacts. I vaguely recall meeting some people in Christchurch and doing some climbing.

www.mojozone.co.nz is a great site devoted to NZ climbing. I have gotten some partners from there for when I go to NZ for work.

I haven't been (YET) but have been asking around as I work on my own trip. I was told it's pretty easy to hook up with people who have common interests by posting on youth hostile message boards.

When I travel I find it's usually helpful to wander into a gear shop and ask the locals where to climb/meet people too ;-)

Good luck!

I'd be stayin' away from them boards. Try them hostels instead.

Dratted proofreader miss again - I'd change it but it's funnier this way, no?
