Rock climbing and martial arts. I love sport climbing. I love crack climbing, but I've never led trad. I love everything about climbing - the sun, the wind, the feel of the rock against my skin, the sound of birds singing, the clink of gear, the "crag chatter," the challenge, getting caught in the rain, the friendships. Climbing is the thing that makes my soul sing; it's my spiritual renewal. As for martial arts, which I also love, I am a dan bo nim in Kuk Sool Won, traditional Korean martial arts. Dan bo nim means black belt candidate and is a step between brown belt and black belt. I am also an assistant martial arts instructor.

I originally started climbing at the age of 15 in 1973, but I got totally lost in life and stopped climbing in 1975. I finally returned to the sport that makes my soul sing in 1994. For several years, I climbed every weekend, mostly locally in Austin and at Enchanted Rock. Eventually, my skills inched up to a respectable level, 5.10s on limestone, up to 5.12a on granite slab, 5.11a on granite steep faces, up to 5.11a on cracks. In the last several years, life has interfered with climbing and I've had many periods of little or no climbing -- and we all know what that does to our skills. :( Now I'm finally back to climbing nearly every weekend! Yay! I have also been the "Local Trip Coordinator" for the Texas Mountain Raiders, our Houston climbing club, since about 1996. If you climb in the Austin area and you're looking for a climbing partner, shoot me an e-mail. I can belay anything on our short Austin routes that you can climb!
