Great Hiker 4 out of 5 stars

Review by: lrwright, 2010-11-04

This was my first high top hiking boot. In the past I went with a low top or even a trail running shoe but after an ankle injury I needed more support. Was lucky enough to get a pro deal while working at a climbing shop otherwise they would have been a little to pricey for me. They are extremely comfortable I have never had any blisters or hot spots from these boots. I have used them on many 3-4 day hikes and also great for day hikes on rough terrain. My favorite trip with the Fugitive was a week long hiking trip in Colorado which included a summit of Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. My only complaint would be overheating but that can be expected with any gore-tex lined boot.

ADD: The rubber soles on these boots is getting really annoying. Slightest bit of moisture on rocky surfaces and put these puppies away!

I work at a Gear Shop that sells primarily Asolo footwear. I checked these boots out after a recommendation by the GM at the time. Initially i was impressed by how fast they broke in. The lacing is most excellent, i have never had a boot that laced up the way these do. I have climbed a couple easy routes in them and find them to edge well and smear. I would highly recommend someone interested in making sure they get a great fit. If these boots were too small or too big they would not perform that well. The negatives, the rubber seems to lack on moist rock. I love vibram soles mainly because they grip even when the rock is wet. Another downfall and a blessing at the sametime is the rubber toe box. This is great in rocky terrain, but sitting next to the campfire WATCH OUT, it will heat up with out you knowing it and the next thing you will know you will have a delaminating shoe (customers that have had problems). Overall, i would say that these boots are great for approaches, light backpacking, winter travel, and super soggy spring days. The price is not the most appealing, but hey, when you work at a Gear Shop the Price really doesn't matter!

These boots got me to the top of South Marron Peak! The break in was quick, and carring a 35lb pack for miles felt really good! I have to agree with "climbingaggie03" that the soles are way to soft, and after scrambling up the Bells i noticed the soles were tore up pretty good.... these boots would rule the hiking world if they had a Vibram sole!!

I've used these boots for day hikes, multiday backing trips, snowshoeing, and crossing snowfields. They are a well put together boot, but I have 2 complaints. One is that while the soles grip really well, they are so soft that they won't last for more than 300-400 miles I don't think. The other thing is I have wider than average feet and these boots started hurting my feet after I had hiked about 30 miles in them and haven't stopped since. So if you have narrower feet they will probably serve you well. They aren't too breatheable, but they are waterproof.
