This book and the companion "More Climbing Anchors" give a solid foundation in the principles behind good anchor building. I look forward to Long's upcoming anchor book for revisions and new ideas.

Great book, good stories, but at the end, the anchor analysis gets kinda old. Great if you are just starting out and want to read all you can about climbing.

Climbing anchors is a must read for anyone building their own anchors but I don’t think it’s as classic as it could be. The chapter on placing SLCDs is excellent and contains several good tips I haven’t seen anywhere else. The book also has some interesting stories about shady anchors.

The last chapter on anchor analysis is useful but every example pretty much goes like: use just the rope, use slings, or use a cordelette. This gets pretty old after the 4th example. The pictures are in black and white so it’s hard to make out some of the placements. Overall though, it’s a good read.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!! Ive read both of the anchor books by john long about 3 times, and then got some one to show me how to do anchors, I already knew how to do every thing... Placed bomber placement, every thing was perfectly equallized..

Get this book, read it a couple times.. and then go and practice anchors...

The best book out there for learning about anchors. Covers webbing, knots, individual pro placements, and anchor systems.
