Dry treatment is extremely slick when new 5 out of 5 stars

Slicker than bare boot soles on wet ice! So slick on the first outing my partner had to use an extra biner for more friction to lower me, and I'm a flyweight. Fortunately, it gets better with a little use, but still remains water resistant. Had it out on ice last weekend, and while others' dry ropes were getting ice on the sheath, my Marathon was fine. Very supple right out of the package. Feeds well, knots easily and doesn't kink up. I have fewer than a dozen outings with it, so I can't comment about longevity, but so far it's been delightful.

I like the simple design and lack of straps and bungees on the outside to snag on shrubbery. There are a couple low-profile loops you can put biners through to attach more stuff if you need to. It rides high, even on my small frame and is unobtrusive. The one thing I do not like is that it has a port for a hydration bladder, but not an interior pocket. The one time I used it with a bladder, the bladder wadded up down in the bottom and I could not drink. I saw an older model which had an internal sleeve. Why did BD take it away in the '08 model? I'm in the process of installing a homemade sleeve to support a water bladder in mine.

Mine's getting awefully stiff... 3 out of 5 stars

after one year of light use. I bought the dry single-pattern version on sale last winter as my first rope. I usually climb with more experienced folks who like to use their own ropes, so this one hasn't been out much in the last year. It has seen some toproping on rock and ice, and the occasional rappel, and it's getting tough to tie knots in. It's not supple at all, anywhere along the length. It is stored clean and dry in a bedroom, and is always flaked out to dry after a day on the ice, or any other time it gets damp or wet. Other than that, it's fine - no fuzzing of the sheath. Given Mammut's excellent reputation, I'm surprised this is happening. My next rope was going to be a Mammut, but now I'm not so sure.

Light, strong, pretty, but... 3 out of 5 stars

Not quite as snag-free as a conventional keylock nose. Got mine on sale, and they were a good value, but I prefer the BD Positron lockers.

Great belay device when your partner outweighs you! 4 out of 5 stars

And so far, I've only climbed with one person that didn't outweigh me. I can tell the difference in holding power between this and a regular ATC, especially when said heavier partner is hangdogging a gym route. I have to flip it to low friction mode for rappelling, though, or I just don't move.
