After deciding to beat the crowds out of the noisy hut; we made excellent time, summiting by dawn and having lunch back at the hut in time to catch the afternoon ride w/ Sr Reyes.

This is the crater Rim of the Pico the Orizaba. A beautiful mountain. From here you go to the right and get to the summit.

This is my climbing partner Daniel on our ascent of the Pico de Orizaba. We are high on the glacier right before the inclination increases to about 55`. This mountain finishes in a crater traverse, beautiful.

Cool clouds near the summit of Orizaba in March 2004. The penitentes were no fun to walk down.

at 18,500 ft, El Pico de Orizaba is the third highest peak in North America, behind Denali and Mt. Logan in Canada. this is the tantalizing view of Orizaba (Citlaltépetl) from the 4X4 road leading up the mountain to Piedra Grande. the haziness is caused by pollution and the burning of surrounding corn fields. photo by jackscoldsweat.

This is the marker for the "summit" of orizaba. The summit is just the highest point along the crater rim, The real summit would have been mugh higher several thousand years ago before it erupted.

This is from the approach to the base of the mountain. The Hut is "just" up over that little ridge in the forground. I would suggest following the road though, short cuts OVER things at 14K arent all that short :P

I took this just after we started climbing up the glacier. This picture doesnt even begin to do the sunrise justice. I highly recomend this route as it was alot of fun, with incredible scenery, yet was not very technical and did not take very long. we did the climb over spring break and had a few days to spare which we spent in Pueblo, mexico chillin and eatin. http://www.mjgradziel.com/mexico02/mex2002.html
thats my friends website with more pics and his trip report.

View of the Jamapa Glacier on Pico de Orizaba taken from near the crater rim. The red peak below is the Sarcofogo. The photo was taken in March in very dry icy conditions-the glacier was suncupped ice with very little snow.

This is Pico de Orizaba from the road leading to the refugio from Tlachichuca. Our driver stopped several times to let us out and take pictures.
