A classic 5.7 trad climb in Zermatt. It is one of the prerequisite climbs required by the Swiss Mountain Guide Assoc. in order to qualify to climb the Matterhorn. The Riffelhorn is an easy, but classic, 700' 5.7 trad with great exposure and view of the Matterhorn throughout the climb.

One of the prerequisite climbs, require by the Swiss Alpine Guide Assoc, to qualify to climb the Matterhorn. It is the Briethorn Traverse. A one-mile knife-edge ridge traverse to the summit of the Briethorn. The Traverse ends at the highest snow cornice in the background.

This is on the descent of the Ober Gabelhorn ENE ridge in the direction of the Grand Gendarme (rock tower) and the Wellenkuppe(3903).

On the 11th of july I witnessed a helicopter crashing at the Cabane des Vignettes in Arolla. Luckly the pilot survived and it's a wonder nobody got injured. If the main rotor of the helicopter had shattered, the consequences would have been dramatic.

You see the last part of the Hohlaubgrat before the short rock step (about 30m) which includes some 2nd grade climbing.
