Coral reef bouldering

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Coral reef bouldering

This exposed uplifted section of ancient coral reef on the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia seemed like a good idea to have a boulder on. The limestone was very sharp but extremely textured. Quite different than anything else I have ever climbed.

Don`t let the water below me fool you, it is not very deep due to the coral reef coming quite close to the surface. Here is an example of how the coral reef is uplifted some 20 or so feet out of the water. The wave action then undercuts the reef to create some awesome roof bouldering action. High tide is the best time to boulder though as the landings at low tide are directly on to a coral reef bench.

Phil climbing on a Pandanus tree. These trees grow all around the Pacific Islands. I climbed this one during a small exploratory trip whilst looking for bouldering on the exposed uplifted coral reef cliff face.

Me Tarzan, ugggh. See all those aerial roots, those all belong to one tree. These large fig trees grow to massive proportions. I stumbled on this one during a small exploration whilst checking out some coral reef bouldering.
