Neil Monteith climbing his way across the lipNeil Monteith (orangeoverhang) cranking his way across the lip at The Underworld, Coles Bay, Frecinet Peninsular, Tasmania. This spectaular cave has been excavated out of solid granite by the wave action of huge Antarctic Southern Ocean swells crashing into the cliffs of the Hazards. Not a place to be in a big sea.

Neil Monteith falling off the lipNeil was not able to maintain his progress across this monster lip traverse towards the middle where the climb heads up on more steep territory. This cave was created by the wave action of huge Antarctic southern Ocean swells scouring out solid granite. Not a place to be in a big sea. Pic by Phil Box using a Nikon Coolpix 5000.

45 degree overhung handcrackPhil Box on bomber hard granite 45 degree overhung handcrack. Grade 24 climb which I started out strong on the handcrack section but flailed miserably at the lip where the crack closed up and then proceeded to dog my way up to about halfway before bailing. The sea cliffs seem to be a little slimey but that is more a factor of the salt buildup drawing moisture away from your hands. Pic by Katherine Dicker.

Classic Tasmanian climbingCan't get much better than this: easy climbing on perfectly clean granite cracks looking out over the Tasman Sea. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the route. Myself climbing, belayed by Claire. Photo: Lucky.

Seaside climbing near Whitewater WallLucky and Claire at Coles Bay. Some of the best rock I've been given to set hands on. An amazing number of possibilities, established and virgin. With the beating sound of crashing waves. Photo: Yann Troutet.
