The Moai collage

Average Rating = 3.25/5 The Moai collage

My first efforts at collating a bunch of images on one photo, I hope it renders correctly. This is The Moai on the northern peninsular of Fortescue Bay in the Tasman Peninsular nat park, Tasmania. Pics by Phil Box using a Nikon Coolpix 5000. Clockwise from top left are Lee Skidmore (Manacubus) rapping in. Looking up into the canopy of one of the forest giants. Lee climbing. Banksia wild flower. The walk along the beach at the start of our journey out to The Moai. Tongue out smiley face on a cut log along the track. And last but not least in the centre of the pic The Moai as seen through a cleft in the rocks at the top of the rap route.

Rope damage

Average Rating = 3.00/5 Rope damage

This is the result of a 4 kg rock from 20 metres up that had crunched into my ribs and broke 2 or 3 and then smashed into my hip and continued down to munch my rope.

Moai in the backdrop

The first of three abseils leading to the seaside platform on which stands the 25 m high Moai. The Moai is the little cousin of the world famous Totem pole, which is located a few km down the coast.

Showing off!

Average Rating = 3.58/5 Showing off!

A Tasmanian classic. The Moai is the Totem Pole's little cousin. It is also quite a bit easier: the normal route is only grade 17/18 (5.8+/.9). But the reward is just as sweet. Bruce Webster showing off after our ascent of the thing. Photo: Y. Troutet
