An after high school jaunt up the West Buttress of the Bastille some 30 years ago. I recall this being the crux. I have to laugh at the stylish attire and the good old EBs! Photo take by Eric Ming or Mark Holt.

When Cracklover came to town, of course we had to climb one of the all time greatest classics in Eldo. The Bastille Crack. Here's the obligatory shot of me at the crux.

Definitely the Bastille Crack. Couldn't wipe the smile from my face for a long time after reaching the top.

The Bastille was a fun time, we linked the first and second pitches which made a more enjoyable climb. The picture is a little grainy, sorry.

The Bastille Crack is an amazing climb. Climbing this with Kevin was superb. I had been looking forward to this climb all year long. We did the route in 3 pitches. Pitch 1, pitch 2 & 3 and pitch 4 & 5. Photo taken on 8-3-2005

Title says it all. IMO, the crux is close to the top of the 3rd pitch. Lots of gear donated in that spot.

The guide books call this 5.8 and it may be if you find the secret handhold. I chickened out right about where you see me. As I was lowering off I saw the fixed pin I missed and the secret handhold.

Easy chimney at the top of Bastille Crack.

The route is a little polished from all the traffic. None the less, it's a must do if you are in the area. Just fun moderate climbing with great gear.
