Non-Heelhook Attempt on Bearded CabbageThis was a very bad idea, when you don't have the reach. Right arm felt the pump real quick after letting go with the left to reach at the crack. Immediate hand traverse back to the right onto the rail again, for a heel-toe leg hook upsidedown hang rest. Did all possible to get this thing clean on the first go, but botched it at the end of the half hour struggle. Felt that long anyway. Came down. Went with a slightly different sequence and made good on the redpoint. A very patient belay by Armando. Photo by Steve. 1 Oct 2006

Judas (5.10b) via HeadlampNate cleaning my half-ass lead of "Judas" (5.10b) at night by headlamp. This route put me back in my place after a solid ten minutes trying to start the damn thing.

First Climb of Spring BreakThis is me topping out on Dandelion (5.10a) in Hidden Valley on the Old Woman rock. We hadn't consulted the guidebook for this one until afterwards. Had I known its grade beforehand, I probably would've hopped on something a bit easier to begin spring break. First climb of my first time in what the old guys call the "Monument". My girlfriend, DeAnna, was the photographer.

Sillouette of BEC on Toe Jam!This was a great climb. I got a little spooked at the top and read it wrong but finished it out after a hang to clear my head. Wasn't so much difficult as mental. I'll know better next time.

Trad meets Lab?My buddy, Theron practices some aid, while my trusty rock hound, 'Chevy' stands guard. He's gone now, (the dog, not the climber), but his memory lives on. At almost 15, he's been surfing, rock climbing, backpacking, white-water rafting, flown in an old Lockheed Super-Constellation, and lived in CA, FL, MD, NY, ME and WA. Quite a life he had!

Bandsaw on Old WomanLee looking smooth and solid and cool on BANDSAW, just a split second before that solid part went all awry. Serious lead, first bolt some 40' above big jagged boulders, and two other bolts at 70' or so. Hats off to those who led. Thin face and roof and more thin face right of SEXY GRANDMA, up to the same anchors. 9 Oct 2005
