Description:

From the parking area at La Joya, follow the well worn climbers trail to the northwest. This trail winds around several sub peaks along the ridge leading to the summit. Eventually you will encounter the climb up to Las Rodillas (the Knees) where the fun begins. From the top of the Knees, the route continues northward over several false summits and the Ayoloco Glacier until you reach El Pecho ("the breast"), which is the summit. The amount of snow you will encounter depends upon how much snowfall has occurred that year. In dry years, the only snow you will encounter is the Ayoloco Glacier, which is not very steep. In years of heavy snowfall, expect some fairly exposed traverses on snow slopes.

A beautiful route. I have been here four times, achieving summit three times.
It is a long trekking, really beautiful, ocasionally there are some minor crevases.
It is an excellent introductory route to high altitude and mountaineering, and wonderful acclimation summit for Pico de Orizaba.

Solo after climbing El Pico de Orizaba, I did not arrange transport back after the climb and was lucky enough to hitch a ride back to Amecameca.
