Description:

Want a taste of alpine in Tennessee? Then visit the Flying Squirrel Buttress and try it out! Bomb's Away starts at a 20 foot right facing flake that takes 0.75 Camalots and is approximatley in the center of the tallest part of the Buttress. (Pitch 1, 140 feet, 5.8) Trend right towards a V-groove above the flake and then layback left to escape the top of the V-groove. Follow the path of least resistance to a large grass covered ledge with a large tree belay. (Pitch 2, 100 feet, 5.8) Walk 30 feet left on the large ledge to belay at the base of the large right facing corner. Climb the corner, which is rotten in the first 20 feet, and trend just right of the corner pulling through an overhang at about the 70 foot mark. Pull on to a steep juggy face and climb for 30 feet to a belay ledge with a large tree on the right. (Pitch 3, 70 feet, 5.7) Climb directly up from the belay at the tree for 15 feet (the branches will be a little in the way). Then traverse left 30 feet underneath a large ceiling being very careful of the loose flakes. When the rock quality becomes acceptable on the left side of the ceiling, climb 30 feet up to the top to a tree belay.

Descent Options:

Double rope rappel from a tree at the top out to get back to the pitch 1 belay. Double rope rappel from slung tree at pitch 1 belay to ground.

3 out of 5 stars Needs some traffic

A little dirty/crumbly in spots but that is to be expected of a seldom traveled route. Offers good exposure and great adventure. Probably a little soft at 5.8 compared to sustained T-Wall routes.
