Finally, an article that supports my decision to use mason jars for water! My partners thought I was nuts... DMT

What crap. The author is accused of oversimplifying something, so she responds by doing it again. Although I consider myself an environmentalist, this Umbra person does not deserve to have her own column. First, she admits that she jumped the gun on nalgene and that they carry harmless HDPE bottles as well as the possibly dangerous polycarbonate lexan bottles. She then follows that up with a bunch of nonsense about polyvinyl chloride manufacture. The thing is that neither lexan or HDPE have anything to do with PVC's. Furthermore, plastics, in certain cases, are highly renewable due to their ability to be recycled. While there are certain problems (non-degradable/recyclable plastics, toxic dioxins from PVC, or the BPA from lexan nalgenes), the overall condemnation of everything plastic is nothing but ignorance.

well, I think she spells it out here: "There is no good reason to use plastic water bottles in everyday life unless you are a professional cyclist or mountain climber." Although one wants to always watch out for those "terrorist bacteria". Not quite up there with the aluminum foil hat crowd, but a little low on actual data.
